As part of the Scorpion program intended to replace the French army's ageing armored vehicles, the VBMR-L (L for léger in French, light in English) nicknamed "Serval",a lighter version of the VBMR Griffon is being developed to replace a part of the French army's VAB fleet. Unless plans are changed,489 Serval are planned to be delivered by 2025 with up to 2,038 units to be acquired. The first vehicle is set to be delivered in 2022.
The vehicle is designed by Nexter and Texelis. Texelis is in charge of the suspension and the transmission. The Serval will be like the Griffon designed in different configurations including personnel carrier, command post, artillery fire control, engineering, ambulance, air defence and many others.
The Serval will have a combat weight of around 17 tons compared to +25 tons for the Griffon. The Serval can carry 2+8 personnels. Very few details about the protection, but is expected to be built with STANAG 4569 level 4 armor protection and resist to IEDs. The vehicle will equip in priority parachute regiments, mountain regiments and support regiments of the French army.
The Serval will be fitted with a RWCS with a 12.7 or 7.62 machinegun.
First rolling tests for the prototype.
