I served in the Hellenic Force of Cyprus (ELDYK) as an infantryman (machine gunner). I generally did not like Cyprus except in a few cases (eg Limassol, Paphos, Ayia Napa, Kyrenia). This country is a sandy straight with no hills or mountains. The worst you see there is the racism that the Greek soldier accepts from the Cypriots because they consider us (mainly the youth) an army of occupation. Unfortunately, the majority in Nicosia consists of immigrants (mainly Filipinos) with Greek Cypriots living on the outskirts of the capital.

I gave 8 years of my life in the French army for the 1er Régiment de Hussards Parachutistes (1st Parachute Hussar Regiment,a prestigious airborne regiment,created in 1720!),gunner on the VAB.
8 years is quite a lot of time but I regret nothing,a truly amazing experience. I was deployed twice on foreign deployments,in Afghanistan in 2010 (in Kapisa) where I saw for the first time action during firefights with the Talibans. Second time was during the begining of Operation Serval in 2013 in northern Mali.
Paphos talks to a lot of French soldiers !
Soldiers coming back from Afghanistan and Mali would spend 2-3 days there to rest and relax before flying back to France !
