The United Arab Emirates, users of the Leclerc tank for more than 20 years, have decided to give free of charges 80 of their tanks to Jordan.
This number should allow the Hashemite Kingdom to equip two of the four tank battalions belonging to the 3rd Armored Division.
This large unit is in fact made up of two brigades, the 40th Armored Brigade (King Hussein) comprising the 2nd Tank Battalion (Royal Tank Battalion) and the 4th Tank Battalion (Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein); The second brigade, the 60th Armored Brigade (Prince Hassan) consists of the 3rd Royal Tank Battalion and the 5th Royal Tank Battalion.
These two brigades were transferred to the Jordanian central command in 2018. All these units are equipped with older tanks such as the Tariq (Centurion), the M60 A1, the Al Khalid (Chieftain), or the Al Hussein (Challenger1).
At peace with Israel, Jordan however remains confronted with an unstable environment with Syria and Iraq, countries with many tanks, some of them of the latest generation such as the T-90.
The UAE approach certainly favored by relations between the leaders of the two countries has also benefited from the normalization of relations between Jerusalem and Abu Dhabi, undertaken for several months and materialized by the recent agreement between the two countries.
