During the Cold War, Antonov was based in the Ukrainian SSR and was one of the world's largest producers of military transport aircraft. The company produced everything from small biplanes to the mighty Antonov An-124 Ruslan and its even larger Antonov An-225 Mriya derivative. Those are even larger than the US Air Force's Lockheed C-5 Galaxy. The collapse of the USSR was traumatic for the Soviet aviation industry, although it was not the end of Antonov or its designing new transport aircraft.

One of the flagship aircraft Antonov developed was the Antonov An-178 short-range medium-airlift transport. It was based on the An-158, with the project being announced in 2010 and the prototype rolling out and flying in 2015. The An-178 was intended to replace the An-12, An-26, and An-32 and was intended to compete with the upcoming Embraer C-390 or even the C-130J/LM-100J in certain contexts. Antonov saw market demand for 200 of the aircraft.
