With the Men’s Hockey World Cup set to begin on August 14, given Team Pakistan’s current form, not much can be expected from it. But there are encouraging signs that a longer-term vision is finally taking shape under the Pakistan Hockey Federation. More, however, still needs to be done…

• • British Roots: Field hockey was introduced to the region during the British Raj and quickly grew into a beloved mass sport.
  • First Match: Pakistan played its first official international match on August 2, 1948, defeating Belgium 2–1 at the London Olympics.
  • Early Dominance: The team captured its first major international gold at the 1958 Asian Games in Tokyo and secured its historic maiden Olympic gold at the 1960 Rome Olympics by defeating arch-rival India 1–0. [1, 2]

• • Olympic Glory: Pakistan added two more Olympic gold medals at the Mexico City Games in 1968 and the Los Angeles Games in 1984. [1]
  • World Cup Supremacy: Pakistan won the inaugural Hockey World Cup in Barcelona in 1971, followed by triumphant runs in Buenos Aires (1978), Mumbai (1982), and Sydney (1994). [1]
  • Asian Ascendancy: The Green Shirts secured eight gold medals at the Asian Games and dominated world rankings through legendary stickwork, speed, and iconic players like Samiullah, Islahuddin, Hassan Sardar, and Shahbaz Ahmed. [1, 2, 3, 4]

• • Shift to Artificial Turf: The transition from natural grass to synthetic turf in the 1970s and 1980s favored European nations with better resource access, slowly eroding South Asian technical advantages. [1, 2]
  • Institutional and Financial Struggles: Administrative disarray within the Pakistan Hockey Federation, lack of modern grassroots infrastructure, and the overwhelming cultural shift toward cricket triggered a steep sporting decline. [1, 2]
  • Recent Setbacks: The team has struggled to qualify for major global tournaments, missing consecutive Olympic cycles as efforts to revamp domestic structures and youth pipelines continue. [1, 2]

Pakistan's Maliha Ali topples Russia's Drozdova at MMA world championships

Maliha secured the first two rounds using strong cage control and ground strikes, and managed to fend off a late takedown attempt in the match.

Russia arrived at the IMMAF World Championships in Tbilisi, Georgia, with more than 60 athletes, government backing and one of the best-funded programmes in the sport. On Tuesday, a 24-year-old from Hunza, Gilgit-Baltistan, beat one of them.

Maliha Ali defeated Veronika Drozdova, a two-time European champion and, at 19, by split decision in their featherweight (65.8kg) bout at the world championships of amateur mixed martial arts.

Maliha, who is also a wushu champion and a national kickboxing gold medallist, came into the tournament off a silver medal at the IMMAF World Cup in Angola earlier this year.

The fight was won early and nearly lost late.
