Twenty-five years after the September 11 attacks heightened US fears of threats from abroad, Americans are now considerably more worried about attacks by domestic extremists than foreign groups, a Reuters/Ipsos poll found.

The poll also found Americans are split on whether the country is safer than before 9/11. Some 36% said the US is about as safe as it was before the attacks, while 32% said it is safer and 29% said it is less safe.

On September 11, 2001, four planes were hijacked by reported Al-Qaeda members, who crashed them into New York City’s World Trade Center and the Pentagon outside Washington, DC, killing 2,977 people. The attacks sparked decades of violence as part of the US’s so-called “War on Terror”, including US-led invasions of both Afghanistan and Iraq, and related conflicts that killed hundreds of thousands of civilians, as well as many troops.

It's been 25 years since the 9/11 terror attacks on the United States. On Friday, the nation will remember those lost on that fateful day and take a moment of silence in their memory.

On this quarter-century anniversary of the attacks, the 9/11 Memorial & Museum will add a seventh moment of silence to honor those who have died of illnesses related to their time at or near the World Trade Center site.
