Presence of the Minister of Defense Nikolaos Panagiotopoulos at the events for the 78th anniversary of the Liberation of the Island of Megisti
The Minister of National Defense, Mr. Nikolaos Panagiotopoulos , accompanied by the Chief of General Staff, General Konstantinos Floros, attended today, Monday, September 13, 2021, the events celebrating the 78th anniversary of the Liberation of the island of Megisti as a delegation.
In the morning, the Minister attended the Holy Communion in the schools of the island and then the Festive Doxology at the Holy Temple of Saints Constantine and Helen. He then went to Iroos and laid a wreath, while he met with the Mayor of Megisti Mr. George Sampsakos , representatives of local organizations and residents of the island.
Mr. Panagiotopoulos boarded the "ROUSSEN" Rocket (TPK) patrolling the area and talked to the crew members. Then she visited the Island Defense Force Camp (DAN) Megisti where she was informed about the mission and its work.
In a statement after the end of his visit, the Minister of National Defense stated the following:
"With feelings of joy, but also more honor, we are here today, in Megisti to celebrate the Anniversary of the Liberation of the island during World War II.
The feeling is that we are not at the end of Greece, but exactly at the point where Greece and its island area begin, just as Evros is the place where Greece and its land area begin.
It is really great for us and our honor to get in touch with this place, its Akrites and a point where "the heart of Greece beats very hard". For me personally, there is a feeling that I do not care about honor in Kastelorizo because the Political and Military Leadership of the Ministry of National Defense are here on the occasion of the Anniversary, but the honor is ours to be present today in Kastelorizo. Happy Birthday!" .
