Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias has instructed the Greek Embassy in Ankara to issue a protest demarche over illegal fishing by Turkish fishing boats inside Greece’s territorial waters, the ministry said Monday.


“Regrettably, Turkey persists with its illegal behavior,” the ministry said in a statement.

“Committed to defending its rights under international law, Greece will leave no challenge unanswered,” it said.

The news follows a formal diplomatic note Sunday against the harassment by Turkish warships of the Maltese-flagged Nautical Geo research ship of French interests.


The vessel was conducting research in an area east of the island of Crete in the context of mapping the possible course of the EastMed pipeline.

It is a topic of discussion where it has been thoroughly analyzed. The coasts of Asia Minor are very close to the islands of the Eastern Aegean that belong to Greece. This paradox results in the absence of what we call "vital space" for Turkey in its own territorial waters. The issue of fishing must be resolved through an intergovernmental agreement and not in an International Court of Justice. Especially the piece of fishing in a marine area such as the Aegean must be divided equally. It is not possible for the coasts of Asia Minor to be fed only by catching their territorial waters and for Greece to fish in the entire Aegean region because it has 200 inhabited islands scattered (out of the 6,000 that exist in total). You can blame Turkey for many other things but it makes an issue as important as fishing has no borders. From the moment that from one end of the Aegean to the other there is the presence of two states, we must all understand that this maritime space must enter into a transnational arrangement on equal terms. In other words, is it logical for a Greek boat to fishing all over the Aegean and for a Turkish boat to fishing on the shores of Asia Minor? Apart from the geopolitical constraint of Turkey (which is another matter) there is also the natural constraint. It is as if you have punished someone on a permanent basis.
