Turkey on Saturday signed a memorandum of understanding with Bangladesh on cooperation among the law enforcement agencies of the two countries on security issues.

The instrument was signed after a home minister-level meeting of the two countries in Dhaka, home minister Asaduzzaman Khan told journalists at his office on Saturday evening.

The memorandum is on security cooperation including counter terrorism, cybercrime and anti-drug trafficking, among other issues, he said.

Turkey also agreed to assist Bangladesh in strengthening the police, the Border Guard Bangladesh, the Coast Guard and the Ansar and VDP with providing training and intelligence sharing between the two sides, the minister said.

Turkey also agreed to extend support in repatriation of Rohingyas of Myanmar to their home in Rakhine and humanitarian support in Rohingya camps in Bangladesh, he added.

Turkish interior minister Suleyman Soylu reached Bangladesh on a day trip on Saturday morning. Two state ministers were in his team in the visit.

He visited Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar and Bangabandhu Memorial Museum in Dhaka during the trip.

He opened a Turkey-run hospital which was damaged in fire in 2021 in Cox’s Bazar.

State minister for disaster management Mohammad Enamur Rahman called on the Turkish minister and discussed cooperation on Rohingya issues.

It was the second home minister-level talks after the first such meeting took place in 2019 in Istanbul.

Turkish ambassador to Bangladesh Mustafa Osman Turan and his Bangladesh counterpart Mosud Mannan were present in the meetings.
