Deal to supply Kuwaiti forces with military uniforms

KUWAIT CITY, July 12: Bangladeshi Ambassador to Kuwait Major General Muhammad Ashiquzzaman has affirmed the strong military ties between his country and Kuwait; indicating such ties started in 1991, reports Al-Qabas daily. Speaking on the sidelines of the gathering he organized recently for the Bangladeshi community on the occasion of Eid Al-Adha, Ashiquzzaman also revealed that his country is waiting for final approval of the deal to supply the Kuwaiti Army with new military uniforms.

“In September last year, we renewed the military agreement with Kuwait for another five years; including reciprocal visits between the military officials of the two countries. We presented an offer to provide the Kuwaiti forces with military uniforms. We previously submitted samples of uniforms and we are now waiting for official approval, so that we can start the process of handing over the new uniforms to the Kuwaiti Army. We also manufacture military boots, but we are not selling any combat equipment or ammunition to Kuwait.”

Ashiquzzaman said about 5,000 Bangladeshi soldiers are serving among the Kuwaiti forces; 50 percent of whom are still serving in Bangladesh, but were assigned in Kuwait for four years and others who extended their service for a period of up to 12 years, while the other 50 percent are serving in the Kuwaiti Army as workers and drivers. He hinted on a possible anti-terror military drill in November – a periodic exercise that will be held in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

On the other hand, Ashiquzzaman confirmed the arrival of 300 nurses in Kuwait in August; expressing his happiness “because this is the first time that nurses with different fields of specialization are hired from Bangladesh. We have an agreement to bring more than 300 nurses. On July 14, 104 nurses will arrive and the rest will arrive gradually, to be completed in August. As of July 10, a total of 86 Bangladeshi nurses have arrived in Kuwait.” He added there are about 250,000 Bangladeshis residing in Kuwait who are receiving all the support and care they need.
