BIRD Aerosystems, an Israeli provider of innovative defense technologies and solutions that protect the air, sea, and land fleets of governments and related agencies, said Monday it has signed a contract to supply an advanced missile protection system for an Airbus A320 aircraft. Israel Defense has learned that the system is for an aircraft used by the head of state of a NATO member country.

BIRD is to deliver its AMPS-MD missile protection system including the SPREOS (self protection radar electro-optic system) DIRCM (directional infrared countermeasures).

According to the company, the advanced SPREOS DIRCM solution will enhance aircraft protection by providing unique threat confirmation, tracking and jamming of all advanced IR-guided missiles. Using a semi-active interrogation radar, SPREOS confirms the validity of the incoming threat, hence eliminating all false alarms, while precisely tracking and analyzing the threat's unique information to enable the most effective jamming response, BIRD said.

The complete AMPS-MD system, including the SPREOS, will be installed in BIRD's all-in-one AeroShield POD, which will be certified on the customer's A320 aircraft in collaboration with Airbus France, the original equipment manufacturer, achieving a supplemental type certificate (STC) for the system installation on the aircraft, according to BIRD.
