Today i received two digital Hard Disks that i had ordered just a few days ago from Daraz. The Drives were in fine condition and i am truly excited about it. For the last couple of days, i have been wondering whether this condition is a documented condition and after researching, i discovered that i am not the only one that is home to this hobby/ The Hobby called Data Hoarding. You see these werent my first drives. I have 1 Terabyte disk space filled on my old laptop (Using it as a backup) and have filled my current laptop's as well. Along with them I have filled 2 Hard Disks of ! Terabyte, 1 of 750 GB and 1 of 500 GB. The two i bought recently are both of 500 GB. All in all i have digital space of 6.25 Terabyte and of this only 1 Terabyte is free, which i am about to fill. This is alot of space for a lawyer who used digital space for recreational purposes. If i was to be honest, i do have trouble deleting any file i have downloaded. I love to download. I download anything and everything and frankly where people use online services, i prefer to download and use it at my leisure.

The more i studied this, the more i discovered that people who hoard digital Data are those that also download anything and everything and while there are those that hoard theor recreational data, many have taken it upon themselves to utilize this, hobby, for the betterment of mankind, by downloading each and everything on the internet and hoarding it in storage devices and while they claim higher purposes, however their hobby is similar to those of us who hoard recreational data.

I have been on this storage path for the last 5 years and as days go by and the size of data increases, so will the need for storage capacity. I cannot delete any single file for after downloading it, i feel i have expended an effort both physical and financial, and i know this is crazy but i feel attached to it and rather than delete, i order storage devices. I donot know how long these two disks will last, most likely 6 months but, it a hobby.

So Do you guys feel close to your data and feel the need to store it rather than delete it?

Used to do that, but time to time i do clean ups which takes up to a day. Especially my download folder, there are always stuff from 7-8 years i didn't want to delete.
I am more of paranoid about loosing my data, so i have RAID clones for each of my hard disks (one for system, one for storage). I have once lost a hard disk in middle of a project, went beyond recovery.
The cloud isn't fast as presumed and not easy to use too.
And one of my friend had the similar, but for music so he has got like thousand or more CD collections, albums of classical music, jazz etc. But once he has discovered all he wanted was present in Spotify, he has let his habit ago, the CDs are there he just doesn't add any.

I have some old photos that I store on multiple hard drives to make sure that they don't get lost. It would be devastating to lose them.

But I wouldn't call myself a data hoarder.... yet. I guess if I get rich then why not 😂😂

Short answer yeah. Mostly because:

- I have been doing the external HDD thing since 2004 (basically 1st year uni, we had an awesome local network for file sharing)

- Laziness to not throw away/sell/give away stuff

- Hoarding genetics in general....though it was my grampa (rest his soul) that was the all time expert on that at whole new level.....given he faced dire poverty in his youth and it definitely left a psychological impact on him to never throw anything away basically. I still remember going through his (always locked to others) hoard room with my mom and couple others (when he was finally bed-ridden + hospitalised and unable to mount defence to his stash....which really needed to be resolved...long story)....my word, unforgettable experience for me.

So trust me data hoarding is pretty small and normal all things considered heh.

My college buddy.... I inherited huge amount of HDDs from him that I am still too lazy to get into....and I have my own old computers (esp laptops) I need to open up and get the HDD out of and extract and put into solid state etc...given a bunch are really not bootable anymore for various reasons.

I have a nice HDD dock that works with both size of SATA disks and even IDE....that I got earlier in the year but again laziness (and just being busy with other matters) got the better of me....but I will put it to use soon hopefully....right now I am in "the den" and have it handy to show:

This particular HDD has been given me a bit of headache given some corrupt sectors in it that I will have to tinker with bit later with expert-buddy on that....but the dock works like a charm past that (just quick swap in/swap out to transfer from/to whichever HDD you want)....I can recommend the ORICO brand for it....if say you have a whole bunch of internal HDD's that you dont want to all mount externally etc.

I might invest into a RAID setup a bit later if I get the interest/time for it....I called early dibs on a whole bunch of stuff from work given a big replacement program they are doing in their server room...I might develop this even further as part of a small supercomputer over time....so I dont have to fill work hours with too much of that stuff.

I can also recommend the ASUS "TUF gaming" laptop (very robust for any kind of work) and logitech for speakers in general...its a very nice secondary setup overall in a RnR recess (kind of a mini study) of my house.

BTW that rubik's cube that must be near 20 years old and is super worn out now...I can solve (non-optimal) in about 4 minutes. More hoarding!
