Despite their agreements, Israel refuses to sell its "Iron Dome" defense system to Morocco

Pica January 30, 2022

It seems that the honeymoon between Morocco and Israel is coming to an end. Several promises made to Morocco after the normalization of its relations with Israel under American leadership have fallen through. These include the military cooperation agreement between the two countries; signed by Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz, who visited Morocco on November 23, 2021.

Indeed, during this visit, the media mentioned the conclusion of an important security agreement between Israel and Morocco. An agreement that would include joint military exercises and security coordination between the two countries.

These media have even reported on a future acquisition by Morocco of the famous Israeli missile defense system Iron Dome. In short, Morocco intended to strengthen its security based on the agreement that will be signed with their Israelis.

Israel refuses to sell its technology to Arab countries
However, the effect of the euphoria passed, Israel reconsidered its position. It refuses to sell its "Iron Dome" defense system to Arab countries such as Morocco and the United Arab Emirates for fear of leaking secrets.

According to Alon Ben David, an Israeli military analyst and Maariv contributor, “Israeli security agencies have rejected the possibility of selling developed technologies to their new partners, the Arab countries that signed the Abraham Accords”.

This analyst also said that the Israeli Ministry of Defense reversed its decision to sell defense systems to the United Arab Emirates: “It sold cybertechnology, but refrained from selling air defense systems” . This volte-face by Israel has even pushed the United Arab Emirates to fall back on North Korean defense systems equipped with Russian technologies that they have purchased.

Morocco-Israel: The cold sets in
This change of course by Israel confirms the coldness that has characterized relations with Morocco in recent weeks. Indeed, while several ambassadors presented their credentials to King Mohammed VI at the reception ceremony for foreign ambassadors, David Govrin, head of Israel's liaison office in Morocco, was absent.

He has not yet submitted his credentials to King Mohammed VI. David Govrin revealed on his Twitter account on October 10 that he had been appointed Israeli ambassador to Morocco. However, this appointment has not yet been formalized for reasons that remain unknown, but which assume that between Israel and Morocco, relations are not as presented at the beginning of normalization.
