MINISTERS OF DEFENCE FROM ESTONIA, LATVIA AND GERMANY AT DIEHL DEFENCE​

Estonia and Latvia sign with Germany for ESSI and also with Diehl Defence for IRIS-T SLM


Visiting Diehl Defence in Röthenbach (Germany), the Estonian and Latvian Ministers of Defence, Hanno Pevkur and Ināra Mūrniece, have signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with the German Minister of Defence, Boris Pistorius, on their future participation in the European Sky Shield Initiative (ESSI).


Furthermore, on the same occasion, both Estonia and Latvia signed a framework agreement with Diehl Defence for the procurement of IRIS-T SLM medium range ground-based air defence systems. For both Baltic countries, it is the biggest defence investment since their independence more than 30 years ago.


The procurement process for medium range ground-based air defence systems is led by the Estonian Centre for Defence Investments (ECDI). Magnus-Valdemar Saar, the Director General of ECDI, stated: “The procurement was conducted at a record pace in a fiercely competitive environment, allowing us to deliver the required capability with the shortest possible lead time and at a very affordable price. This process involved Estonian and Latvian organizations joining forces in a complex requirements development, rigorous evaluations, and negotiations. It must now be followed by meticulous project management to ensure the first systems are delivered and operational in 2025."


ESSI is a project aiming for the establishment of an integrated ground-based European air defence, originally initiated by Germany in August 2022. By now, 19 European states have declared their intention to join the project, led by 17 NATO countries, including Austria and Switzerland. During today’s ceremony, Estonia and Latvia became the first ESSI nations after Germany to sign for IRIS-T SLM systems with Diehl Defence.


Boris Pistorius, the German Minister of Defence, emphasized the importance of ESSI and ground-based air defence for strengthening Europe and the NATO alliance, and expressed his satisfaction that Germany will receive IRIS-T SLM systems as from 2024 on for enhancing its national defence capabilities.


The signatures follow shortly after the invitation of the German Chief of Air Force, Lieutenant General Ingo Gerhartz, to his ESSI colleagues to visit the new “European Air Defence Academy” in Todendorf, Germany, which took place on September 5. The academy offers joint and combined training possibilities for IRIS-T SLM under the ESSI umbrella.


Diehl Defence is a keen supporter of ESSI and will be ready to supply any of its ground-based air defence systems for that purpose as the involved nations deem appropriate. Within the Diehl Defence product range, IRIS-T SLM is designed for the countering of threats posed by enemy aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles and drones at a range of up to 40 km and an altitude of up to 20 km. An IRIS-T SLM fire unit consists of the components missile launcher, radar and tactical operations center. It is supplemented by support elements such as workshop, spare parts and reloading vehicles. The system is characterized by its high tactical mobility, deployability of the missile launchers and multiple target engagement with low personnel requirements.


The IRIS-T SLM system convinces with its excellent performance in operational use in Ukraine. According to the customer, the system achieved a close to 100 percent hit rate even during waves of attack with more than 12 targets.

DIEHL DEFENCE UNDERLINES ITS INVOLVEMENT IN KOREA AT ADEX IN SEOUL​

On the occasion of the International Aerospace & Defence Exhibition (ADEX), held from October 17 to 22 2023 in Seoul (Korea), Diehl Defence exhibits selected products at its stand.


Most prominently featured is the air-to-air missile IRIS-T, which is currently being integrated into the KF-21 fighter, a 4.5 generation multi-role fighter aircraft under development by Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) at the moment. As most recent milestone in the KF-21 program, the missile was successfully test-fired from KF-21 prototype No. 2 in April 2023.


In addition to the IRIS-T exhibit on the Diehl Defence stand, the missile will also be on display integrated into a KF-21 aircraft at KAI’s static display . The long standing cooperation between Diehl Defence and KAI extends to the FA-50/T-50 aircraft since ADEX 2021, when the two partners agreed on an MoU for the integration of IRIS-T into this platform as well.


So far, IRIS-T has been integrated into major combat aircraft platforms such as Panavia Tornado, Eurofighter Typhoon, JAS-39 Gripen, F-16, EF-18 and F-5. The system is in service or on order with several NATO countries as well as Brazil, Thailand, Saudi Arabia and South Africa.


With the successful integration program on KF-21, IRIS-T proves once more its compatibility with both legacy and modern fighter aircraft. The integration of IRIS-T into the KF-21 opens up new market opportunities for Diehl Defence and IRIS-T.


KF-21 aircraft are expected to be delivered to the program launch nations Korea and Indonesia starting from late 2026. IRIS-T will be ready to complete the weapon inventory of KF-21.


Beyond IRIS-T, the Diehl Defence stand at ADEX 2023 will feature ammunition products and the ground-based air defence system IRIS-T SLM, which is combat-proven in current operations and will be an important element in air defence systems of several European countries.

DIEHL DEFENCE SIGNS MOU WITH LIG NEX1 ON KF-21​

New chapter in IRIS-T air-to-air guided missile’s career by broadening partnerships with Korean players on KF-21

During ADEX International Aerospace & Defence Exhibition, held this week in Seoul (Korea), Diehl Defence has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with LIG Nex1, a major Korean defence contractor for missile systems and defence products. Since Diehl Defence’s short range air-to-air missile IRIS-T has been selected for the KF-21, Diehl Defence is gradually building up cooperation projects with Korean industry partners. With its expertise as experienced missile company, LIG Nex1 is the perfect match in the country to support the IRIS-T program.


The MoU foresees to explore possibilities for cooperation in the IRIS-T program to strengthen Diehl’s position in the Asian market.


The collaboration of Diehl Defence and LIG Nex1 comes as addition to the previous partnerships signed by Diehl Defence with Korea Aerospace Industries, Ltd. (KAI), beginning in 2017 with the start of the integration of IRIS-T into the KF-21 fighter. This was followed by a MoU, signed during ADEX 2021, on the integration of IRIS-T on KAI’s FA-50/T-50 as well.


Diehl Defence’s increased cooperation with Korean companies opens a new chapter in the success story of the IRIS-T missile. With growing demands in the Asian market for missile systems, Korean industry partners are becoming more and more involved in the program and will gain benefits from these demands.


Beyond opening up new market opportunities for IRIS-T applications, Diehl Defence is also incrementally developing new versions of IRIS-T. This ongoing work will provide IRIS-T with an increased performance potential protecting platforms from the threats of today and tomorrow.


By upgrading the current serial status of its missile, Diehl Defence ensures many more years of service life for IRIS-T to come.

HYDEF PROJECT REACHES NEXT MILESTONE​

As first European program for defence against hypersonic threats, the HYDEF project of the consortium around SMS (amongst others Escribano Mechanical & Engineering, GMV and SENER AEROSPACIAL) from Spain and Diehl Defence from Germany was able to clearly position itself by signing the contract with OCCAR. This marks the official start of the project. The consortium consists of 13 companies from seven European nations.


Diehl Defence CEO Helmut Rauch congratulated the project team and announced: "This is an important milestone for the HYDEF project. The realization of tomorrow's air defence, specifically against hypersonic threats, can now begin in Europe."


The Spanish company SMS is responsible for the project management within the HYDEF project. The German system house for air defence systems Diehl Defence, headquartered at Lake Constance, is in charge of the technical implementation from the development of the overall system to the interceptor itself. In the future, the overall system will be able to detect and intercept hypersonic cruise missiles (HCMs) as well as highly agile hypersonic glide vehicles (HGVs). All this will be realized through the networking of various, partly space-based sensors and the interceptor system which will be deployed on the basis of existing NATO BMD command and control systems wherever possible. The consortium is optimally qualified to solve this highly complex and multidimensional task of system interconnection.


Diehl Defence can draw on many years of experience and comprehensive know-how in the field of air defence solutions. Among other things, the system leader Diehl Defence together with the partners HENSOLDT and Airbus develops and produces the medium-range ground-based air defence system IRIS-T SLM. The system is being successfully deployed in Ukraine to ensure the protection of the Ukrainian population. Furthermore, Diehl Defence is also a reliable partner of the German Bundeswehr and international armed forces in the field of missiles, ammunition, training and protection
systems.


The HYDEF project is based on the successful signing of the contract in July 2022, when the European Commission announced the HYDEF project as the winner of the tender. At that time, the HYDEF project was able to prevail over the competitor and could clearly win the Europe-wide tender. On the German side also HENSOLDT and Airbus are involved as national partners in the HYDEF project. The goal is to expand the technology leadership in Germany and to provide the user with fully accessible, open system elements.


HYDEF is closely linked to the PESCO EU project "Timely Warning and Interception with Space-based TheatER surveillance" (TWISTER) and deals with the development of an overall endo-atmospheric interceptor concept for air defence. This project is being funded with 100 million euros.

LATVIA ORDERS IRIS-T SLM FROM DIEHL DEFENCE​

On Thursday, November 30, the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Latvia and Diehl Defence signed a purchase order on the procurement of the IRIS-T SLM medium-range air defence system. For Latvia, it is the biggest defence investment since its independence more than 30 years ago.

The procurement is based on the framework agreement signed between Latvia, Estonia and Diehl Defence in September 2023.


By signing the purchase order worth around 600 million euros, Latvia will receive all the necessary equipment for an effective operation of the IRIS-T SLM system, which will ensure the introduction of layered air defence in Latvia as well as the integration of existing short-range capabilities.


Diehl Defence will start deliveries of its medium-range air defence systems in 2026. Until then, Latvia will train its personnel and upgrade its infrastructure in such a way that the National Armed Forces are ready to fully operate and maintain the IRIS-T SLM systems by the time of delivery.


The purchase of the IRIS-T SLM medium-range air defence system will contribute to Latvia's goal to establish a multi-layered air defence system, in which air defence systems of various ranges do not only protect other ground assets, but also provide mutual protection to each other and operate in a network environment. Each successive layer increases the overall resilience of the entire system against adversary activities.


The joint procurement by the two Baltic nations of one type of air defence system will allow Latvia and Estonia to save budgetary funds and facilitate mutual coordination in the defence of the Baltic States region. Furthermore, it facilitates the interoperability and interchangeability of systems and components.

DIEHL DEFENCE TAKES OVER PRECISION PARTS MANUFACTURER ALLWEIER​

Diehl Defence, a leading system house in the defence industry in Germany and the largest industrial employer in the western Lake Constance district, will take over Allweier, a precision parts manufacturer based in Überlingen, on January 1, 2024. The existing business of Allweier will be continued by Diehl Defence as an independent business unit under the name "DD Präzisionsteile GmbH & Co KG".


The Allweier Group went through insolvency proceedings in the course of which Diehl Defence was selected from several applicants as the buyer. This will secure the jobs of about 160 people in Überlingen currently employed by Allweier. With the takeover, Diehl Defence expands its production capacity and opens up a new source of supply for its existing product range. Allweier currently manufactures high-precision metal parts for several industrial sectors, which can also be used in a large number of Diehl Defence products, such as guided missiles.


Helmut Rauch, CEO of Diehl Defence, said: "The acquisition of the Allweier Group fits perfectly into our growth strategy, secures jobs at the Überlingen site and opens up new prospects for the employees of the Allweier Group. Throughout the transaction process, a future-oriented solution was found for all parties involved in constructive cooperation with the insolvency administrator "Schleich & Partner"."


Diehl Defence is currently in a phase of strong growth. In the years ahead a continued increase in production, sales and workforce is forecast which will further strengthen the market position of Diehl Defence as leading German system house in the field of air defence. Through the acquisition of Allweier, Diehl Defence can strengthen its existing workforce with qualified employees in the new company as well as its supply chain.


The takeover of Allweier is based on many years of good cooperation with the municipality and local authorities and is part of ongoing measures to secure the location: a new warehouse and logistics building was already built at Diehl Defence's headquarters in Überlingen in 2021/2022 and in October 2023 the company acquired a plot of land to build a new administration building in the coming years.

FRAMEWORK CONTRACT FOR IRIS-T GUIDED MISSILES SIGNED​

On December 20, Annette Lehnigk-Emden, President of the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) and Helmut Rauch, CEO Diehl Defence, signed a framework contract for the procurement of more than 1,200 IRIS-T guided missiles for Germany.

The contract was realized in the shortest possible time by the IRIS-T Project Management Office (PMO), which is located within the BAAINBw, in order to meet the additional demand of the long-time IRIS-T consortium leader Germany.


IRIS-T (InfraRed Imaging System – Tail/Thrust Vector Controlled) is the European, world's most advanced short-range air-to-air missile, developed and produced under the leadership of Diehl Defence in cooperation with the industry consortium partners from Sweden, Spain, Italy, Greece, Norway and Austria. The IRIS-T project reflects the capability of European cooperation in the defence sector and demonstrates the outstanding developments that the European defence industry is capable of. As a member of the IRIS-T 6 nations development consortium, Germany is a competence partner that is and will continue to play a leading role in the further development of the missile.


Meanwhile, the air forces of 12 nations rely on the outstanding capabilities of IRIS-T. Since its introduction in 2005, more than 5,000 guided missiles have been delivered. IRIS-T is among the standard armament of the Eurofigther/Typhoon and is integrated into the platforms F-16, Gripen, Tornado, EF-18, KF-21,F-5E, FA50 and IAR-99. Not only enemy fighter aircraft can be engaged, but also attacking air-to-air and surface-toair missiles. The pilot is even able to successfully counter attacks from the rear without having to change the aircraft's course. The basis missile is incrementally further developed and will continue to set benchmarks with new capabilities in its original air-to-air role. Thus, the future viability of IRIS-T is ensured by the 6 nations development consortium.

STARTING GUN SOUNDS FOR SHORT- AND VERY SHORT-RANGE AIR DEFENCE SYSTEM​

Germany’s military procurement agency, the Federal Office for Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw), signed a development contract today with the Short- and Very Short-Range Air Defence System Consortium (ARGE NNbS) for the “Air Defence System, Short- and Very Short-Range”, or LVS NNbS.

Germany’s military procurement agency, the Federal Office for Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw), signed a development contract today with the Short- and Very Short-Range Air Defence System Consortium (ARGE NNbS) for the “Air Defence System, Short- and Very Short-Range”, or LVS NNbS.


Set up in 2021, ARGE NNbS has three member companies: Rheinmetall Electronics GmbH of Bremen, Diehl Defence GmbH & Co. KG of Überlingen, and Hensoldt Sensors GmbH of Taufkirchen. The contract is worth around €1.2 billion (including VAT), with Rheinmetall accounting for €607 million, Diehl for €339 million, and Hensoldt for €284 million, reflecting their respective workshares.


Making sure that Germany lives up to its role as NATO’s lead nation in ground-based air defence and the European Sky Shield Initiative, the introduction of the LVS NNbS is a decisive step, closing one of the Bundeswehr’s significant capability gaps.


The core objective of the LVS NNbS development project is to optimize medium-range air defence as well as developing high-mobility air defence capabilities for protecting manoeuvre forces from aerial threats – even when on the move.


Key objectives include achieving the necessary networking of individual components; integration of the medium-range IRIS T-SLM guided missile; assuring interoperability; and extending the intercept zone to include short-range threats.


Networking will enable connection to the IRIS T-SLM fire units currently under procurement as well as to the Skyranger 30 ground-based mobile air defence system, to be procured in future.


The project is in the hands of the German defence industry; ARGE NNbS is the German government’s contract partner.


By bundling complementary core capabilities – including those of other German defence contractors – ARGE NNbS brings together the foundational knowledge, capabilities and expertise needed to meet the requirements. In the process, key technologies will stay in Germany, where they will be be preserved and perfected.


Rheinmetall and its Electronic Solutions and Vehicle Solutions divisions bring technological know-how and longstanding experience in the development and delivery of defence systems, especially in combat vehicles, communications and systems integration.


Diehl Defence specializes in developing and fabricating guided missiles. Thanks to its advanced system solutions for ground-based air defence, it is established force in the international market.


A supplier of key national technologies, Hensoldt brings to the working group its expertise and tried-and tested products such as radar systems. By now, 19 European states have declared their intention to join the project, including Austria and Switzerland in addition to 17 NATO countries. Further countries have expressed their interest. Following Germany, Estonia and Latvia, Slovenia is the fourth ESSI nation to sign a contract with Diehl Defence on IRIS-T SLM systems.


Slovenia for the first time was able to make use of a standardized contract for ESSI procurements. It facilitates future synergy effects and enables a quick procurement process from which not only further ESSI customers, but also the industry will benefit.


In order to ensure a synchronized delivery of IRIS-T SLM to the ESSI nations, Diehl Defence distributed production slots to the interested nations in such a way that the system can also be delivered to Slovenia in due time.


With this procurement Slovenia strengthens the air defence of its country and possesses capabilities in the medium-range for the first time. The procurement of further systems is envisaged.

GBAD systems have seen dramatically increased demand, particularly in Europe but also elsewhere, since several conflicts have erupted or escalated over the last two years. Diehl Defence has delivered fire units of IRIS-T SLM to several customers worldwide since 2022, with customer testimonials confirming that the system regularly achieves hit rates of almost 100 per cent. Thus, IRIS-T SLM as one of the most modern ground-based air defence systems in this market segment is combat proven.


GBAD systems by Diehl Defence are based on the company’s expertise with guided missiles, most prominently the IRIS-T air-to-air short-range missile. At Singapore Airshow, Diehl Defence is exhibiting its IRIS-T guided missile, which is integrated in many Western fighter aircraft and in service in Asia on Thailand’s Gripen aircraft as well as on the country’s F-16s and F-5s. Currently, Diehl Defence is collaborating with Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) on the integration of IRIS-T on the KF-21 and FA-50/T50 platforms as part of their ongoing development program. A major milestone was passed in 2023 with the successful live firing of an IRIS-T missile from an airborne KF-21.


KF-21s are due to be delivered to the ROK air force, with Indonesia being another partner in the industrial program. The IRIS-T missile is the perfect match for the KF-21, making it the ideal fighter solution for air forces in South East Asia and around the world.

DIEHL DEFENCE AND KAI INTENSIFY THEIR COOPERATION​

Diehl Defence and Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the purpose of intensifying their integration and marketing efforts, addressing IRIS-T potential on FA-50 and KF-21 aircraft.

Diehl Defence, a world-leading supplier of air-launched guided missile systems, and Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), manufacturer and aircraft authority of the FA-50 series and KF-21 combat aircraft, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the purpose of intensifying their integration and marketing efforts, addressing IRIS-T potential on FA-50 and KF-21 aircraft.


The purpose of the agreement is the joint goal to integrate the IRIS-T missile into FA-50/T-50 and KF-21 Block II aircraft. This confirms the intention of both companies to investigate the potential for cooperation, as previously announced in an earlier agreement, signed during ADEX 2021.


In addition, the MoU covers the collaboration of working groups on marketing efforts for KAI aircraft equipped with Diehl Defence missiles. Finally, both companies agree to investigate the possibility to modify or further develop missile systems from Diehl Defence for Korea’s indigenous aircraft programs.


Meeting during the visit of Kang Goo-Young, KAI CEO, as part of a Korean trade delegation to Berlin, Germany, this week, Dr. Harald Buschek, Chief Program Officer and member of the Diehl Defence Division Board, signed the MoU.


The companies announce the consolidation of their cooperation on the eve of Singapore Airshow, due to take place this week as Asia’s biggest aerospace and defence trade event this year.


Diehl Defence and KAI have worked together for a number of years by now, combining Diehl Defence’s experience and capabilities in the field of development, production and integration of missile systems with KAI’s track record with successfully launching and managing military aircraft programs. The collaboration began in 2017 with the start of the integration of IRIS-T into the KF-21 Block I fighter.

DIEHL DEFENCE SIGNS MOU WITH NORTHROP GRUMMAN​

Studying the feasibility of connecting IRIS-T SLM ground-based air defence systems with IBCS


Diehl Defence has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Northrop Grumman (NG), which covers a study to validate the possibility of connecting Diehl Defence’s IRIS-T SLM ground-based air defence systems (GBAD) with Northrop Grumman’s Integrated Battle Command System (IBCS). In the course of this action both parties agreed to collaborate on exploring potential common applications of IRIS-T SLM ground-based air defence system and IBCS in Germany as well as other interested European countries.


IBCS, a U.S. Army program of record, connects different sensors and effectors in one command and control system in order to generate a truly integrated network and to enable data exchange of fire control data between all available assets in the battlespace.


Furthermore, it can provide command and control functionalities for different levels of command. It is due to be implemented in Patriot air defence systems throughout the world. The possible integration of IBCS with GBAD systems from Diehl Defence would offer European users compatibility with additional GBAD systems. Integration with IBCS would also support the European Sky Shield Initiative (ESSI) as interoperability between different capabilities from several nations is increased.


Torsten Cook, Senior Vice President Business Unit Ground-Based Air Defence of Diehl Defence, and Rebecca Torzone, Vice President and General Manager Global Battle Management and Readiness Division of Northrop Grumman, signed the MoU in Berlin (Germany).


Torsten Cook pointed out during the ceremony: "We are excited about this partnership which offers new options to our IRIS-T SLM customers (e.g. utilizing several GBAD systems such as IRIS-T SLM and Patriot in parallel), improves interoperability and thus increases the combat value of the systems used.”


Rebecca Torzone added: "Today marks a pivotal moment in our commitment to advancing defense capabilities together with German industry. By joining forces with Diehl Defence, we embark on a collaborative journey to shape the future of integrated air and missile defense.”
