Egypt commemorated on Wednesday morning the 35th anniversary of the Armed Forces’ Martyrs and Veterans Day at Al-Manara International Conference Centre, Cairo, in the attendance of President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi.
The day, marked annually on 9 March, was designated in honour of former army chief of staff Abdel-Moneim Riad who died on 9 March 1969.
Riad and a number of his aides were killed in an Israeli mortar attack on the Egyptian front during the post-1967 War of Attrition between the two countries.
Attendees of the event included the Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, the ministers of interior and defence, the House of Representatives and Senate speakers, as well as actors and public figures.
Addressing the event, El-Sisi said the sacrifices of Egypt's youth for their country should be cherished.
"The stories of every martyr are a treasure trove of loyalty and humanity," El-Sisi added.
During the event, a documentary was screened under the title The Brave Army. A play was also performed starring renowned actors. The play focused on martyrs' sacrifices and the anguish of their families.
Arts, such as drama, convey events one may not experience but help transfer them to every home, El-Sisi noted.
On Tuesday, El-Sisi delegated Minister of Defence and Military Production Mohamed Zaki to lay a wreath at the Memorial of the Armed Forces Martyrs in Nasr City.
The defence minister paid tribute to former president Mohamed Anwar El-Sadat and senior commanders of the Armed Forces.
He also delegated army officers to lay wreaths at the Unknown Soldier Memorial for Egyptian and Arab soldiers to mark the occasion.
