Taiwan Air Force spent 110 billion yuan to upgrade 142 F-16A/B fighters to F-16V specifications. The first upgraded F-16V fighter combat team will hold an assembly ceremony at the Chiayi base at the end of the month. President Tsai Ing-wen will be invited to host the ceremony.

Air Force officials said that the Fourth Wing of the Air Force Chiayi Base has installed more than 22 F-16V fighters, accounting for more than 60% of the total fleet of the Wing. They all have initial combat capability (IOC) and have already performed combat readiness tasks. The F-16V from Chiayi Base and the IDF Jingguo from the First Wing of Tainan Base will take on air defense missions in the southwest airspace, intercepting the common aircraft intruding into the Southwest Air Defense Identification Zone.

American arms dealer Lockheed Martin announced in 2012 the development of a new model of F-16 fighter—F-16V. V means "Viper" in English. The new model will be equipped with AN/APG-83 active phase control. Array (AESA) radar, new onboard computer, Link-16 data link enhance communication capabilities, and modify the pilot's cockpit.

In addition to upgrading 142 F-16A/B fighters to F-16Vs, together with the US President Trump’s approval of the arms sale of 66 F-16V fighters to Taiwan, my country will have more than 200 F-16 fighters, only in number. Second to countries such as the United States, Turkey, Egypt, Israel, and the Netherlands. my country's F-16V fighter aircraft will also have the ability to launch AIM-9X infrared-guided Sidewinder short-range air-to-air missiles, which is the strongest performance of the Air Force Type III fighter.
