France is among the few countries that doesn't have a dedicated military police unit. Instead provost and all others military police related missions are assumed by the French Gendarmerie Nationale. On the French territory,provost missions for the army are are assumed by local Gendarmerie units where the garrison is stationed while there are special divisions for the navy (Gendarmerie Maritime,it also acts as a coast guard force) and the air force (Gendarmerie de l'Air).
However,many missions devoted to military police units are assumed by several units of the French armed forces. (like the management of prisoners of war)
In foreign garrisons,provost missions are assumed by the Gendarmerie Prévôtale. Detachments are sent alongside the deployed French units. They carry out general provost missions but also participate in the training of local units in the countries they are deployed.
They are easily recognizableby their black armbands with Gendarmerie Prévôtale written on them.
The French foreign legion on the French soil has its own military police force called Patrouille de la Légion Étrangère whose missions are ;
To assist and protect soldiers serving as foreigners inside the garrisons
Ensure the general discipline of the armies are observed by the Légionnaires wearing the uniform inside and outside the garrisons
Participate in missions of protection and surveillance of military installations
The PLE doesn't have judicial police powers and must report any crimes etc. to an officer of the Gendarmerie Nationale,the only judicial military police force of the French armies. Outside of France military police missions to the FFL are enforced by the Gendarmerie Prévôtale.
Their members are recognizable by their green and red armbands with PLE written on them.
