The government is reviewing the armed forces' cyber security policy and planning to develop domestic drone production capabilities as part of efforts to modernise Bangladesh's defence capacity, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman told parliament today (2 September).
The government was taking steps to strengthen maritime surveillance and situational awareness to address emerging threats, including cyberattacks and drone-related risks, the prime minister said in response to a question from reserved women's seat MP Sherin Sultana during the question-answer session of parliament, chaired by Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed.
Tarique said the armed forces' cyber security policy was under review, while plans were being developed to establish the capability to manufacture drones domestically.
He also said initiatives were being taken to improve surveillance and situational awareness at sea.
Responding to another question from reserved women's seat MP Nilufar Chowdhury Moni, the prime minister said there are specific policies governing the deployment of the armed forces to assist the civilian administration.
Under Article 126 of the Constitution, the armed forces are deployed to ensure overall security during elections, he said.
He added that the armed forces assist the civilian administration during disasters and emergencies under the Defence Ministry's "Instruction regarding In Aid to the Civil Power".
The armed forces may also be granted legal authority to assist in restoring law and order under Section 129 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898, the prime minister said.
