Bangladesh Investment Development Authority Executive Chairman Chowdhury Ashik Mahmud Bin Harun revealed that the government is planning to invest in the defence industry to foster technological development.

During a press briefing at the Bangladesh Investment Summit 2025 held at the InterContinental Dhaka on Wednesday, April 9, Ashik Chowdhury came up with the announcement in response to queries from media personnel covering the summit.

Ashik Chowdhury emphasised the need for technological development within the military sector, saying, "In principle, we think that some transplants need to be made in the military for technological development."

He highlighted the potential of leveraging existing resources and expertise in defence manufacturing to create a robust hub for small-scale military products.

Ashik Chowdhury pointed out that Bangladesh already possesses ordnance factories with skilled personnel and technical knowledge.

Drawing parallels with the country’s success in commercial industries like RMG (ready-made garments) and leather, he proposed a similar "manufacturing hub" concept for the defence sector.

"We don't need to make tanks, spaceships, or fighter jets," he clarified. "We are limited to small-scale products such as advanced radios, tank axles, small bullets, and small arms. But there is significant demand for these products too."

To achieve this vision, BIDA is actively collaborating with the Army, Navy, and Air Force to attract foreign investors willing to bring advanced technologies to Bangladesh through strategic partnerships.

"We are working to find investors from outside who will come to Bangladesh through technology transfer," Ashik Chowdhury explained. "They will come here, and we will commit to purchasing their products while also exploring opportunities to export them regionally."

He further added that the government may introduce the concept of a military economic zone, modelled after the successful economic zones in the country, to facilitate investment and production in the defence sector.

By fostering collaboration between local institutions and international partners, the government seeks to boost technological innovation, create jobs, and contribute to national security.
