Greece and the Greek Cypriots on the island build a naval base in a Turkish village!

Cooperation between Greece and South Cyprus continues to develop within the framework of the common strategy for the Mediterranean. In addition to the project of creating ‘’defence ecosystem’’ of the two sides, the attempt to establish a naval base now attracted attention.

Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias, made a visit on July 15, due to the 50th anniversary of the Cyprus coup in order to highlight its support for the South Cyprus administration.

As part of the visit, both sides agreed on the establishment of a naval base near the village of Tatlisu (Mari) near Larnaca, where Turks lived before 1974. Once a Turkish village, Tatlisu was evacuated because of the massacres of the EOKA terrorists.

The Greek Defence Minister Dendias said the two countries are working to reduce tensions and ensure freedom of navigation, emphasizing the role of stability. South Cyprus Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas stressed his common desire to take every possible step to maintain peace, security, stability and cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean region.

During the visit, the Greek Minister accused the Turks of being invaders, while the offered their respect and gratitude to the EOKA terrorists. Dendias: ‘’The unity of helenism is a necessary condition for the survival of the Greeks. It is not necessary to divide, but to unite, ” he said. Thus, he contradicted himself while trying to adopt an anti-coup attitude.

Greece and Cyprus are actively conducting joint exercises and defence programmes. The defence cooperation will be the main theme of the second intergovernmental conference in November 2024’.

That's a pretty hefty provocation. That's what happens when you are not able to respond to provocation anywhere in our neighbourhood.
