The United States has approved the sale of 20 F-35A Lightning II stealth fighter jets to Greece including six originally destined for Turkey, according to reports.

Greek newspaper Estia reported that the procurement of the jets were discussed during the visit to the country by the U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo earlier this month. According to the report, the six F-35As will be purchased in 2022.

Last month, Greece also announced its intention to acquire 18 Dassault Rafale fighter jets from France to equip the Hellenic Air Force.

The new developments came amid a standoff between Greece and Turkey over territorial dispute in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Turkey was expelled from the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program after it took delivery of the Russian S-400 Triumf advanced air defense systems. The U.S. said that S-400 is a threat to the stealth fighter jet and it compromises the shared NATO air defence systems.

Turkey recently began live-fire testing of its S-400 Triumf system from the Sinop province on the Black Sea coast. The test-firings were condemned by Washington.

It’s not really surprising that Greece will get some F-35s but this- “Including Six Destined for Turkey”- is where the real symbolism is. It really shows that America is now 100% behind Greece and Turkey is an enemy state.

Can Greeks afford to buy these? Remember they are not just 85 million dollars each. They come with so many ancillaries that the price per aircraft goes beyond 120million+ . Also upkeep of these planes must be nearly double If not more of the f16’s. They need special hangars etc. The list goes on! 20 Rafales , 20 f35’s and v70 upgrade. Plus mirage planes. A very untasty soup!!

Mate it does not matter if Greece can afford it or not. If US and EU decides it's strategic necessary then they will give it to them.

Seriously F35 and F16 upgrades. They might as well cut the F16 upgrades and buy more F35s.

I do believe Turkiye will get its F35s if not all our confidence is for the TAI TFX. Russian and Chinese planes are a no go. France wont sell their Rafales to Turkiye I also doubt will get the Grippen or the Typhoon. Does Britain even make planes all I know is that they are developing the Tempest. Also the Harriers are legendary.

Long road to making our Jets is the way artik I think its time we accept it. Long road is long, difficult but in the end it will pay off.

But I also dont want the Turkish airforce to lose its edge in the region.

Deploy S-400 on south-west, and try to detect Israel F-35. Problem solved.
