This thread will serve as a general thread about Korean heavy-duty reciprocating engines products and programs, both for civilian and military, ranging from trivial electric motors, high-speed to low-speed diesel engines for trucks, armored vehicles and ships, to future electric drives and alternative fuel engine programs.

any update?
SMV1360 replacing MB 871 has been developed and SMV1000 replacing MT 881 is under developmet and is scheduled to be completed by mid 2020s. Concrete plans for the application of these engines replacing the German origin engines in K1 and K9 variants are currently undecided.

SMV1360 will most likely will be included in the K1A3/K1E2 upgrade program scheduled for mid-late 2020s following major overhaul. This is also due to operational support related problems regarding the parts supply of the MB 871 engine which is a fairly old model today.

Since K9s in Korean Army service are relatively new, it is unlikely that MT 881s inside them will be outright replaced in the short term. Current focus of SMV1000 program is to offer alternative engine for the export customers in the ME and elsewhere, such as UAE, which the export deal was blocked by the German embargo.

Underlying technologies for future AFV drivetrain/powertrain are under development. These are hybrid drive and hydrogen PEM fuel cell driven electric powertrain.

New test and evaluation planned for SNT transmission prior to decisions regarding 4th batch of K2 contract. Though there are some disagreements between SNT and DAPA regarding which transmission should be used for the reevaluation.

The SMV-1000 was announced at the 2023 KOREA INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY R&D EXPO on December 6-8. Mass production is expected to begin in 2024.

-STX engine / Katech, Hanyang University, Hanwha Aerospace
-Summary : • Successfully developed indigenous engine to lift export restrictions on K9 self-propelled howitzers to Egypt, UAE, Poland, etc.
- •Signed a contract to export 337 domestic engines to Egypt (KRW 134.8 billion) and expanded the market (KRW 168 billion)
•Achieving world-class technology for 1,000-horsepower engine basic performance and core components
•The K9 engine performance evaluation developed this time allows you to check engine performance equal to or higher than that of the MTU
•335 units will be exported to Egypt through full-scale mass production from 2024 after the release of the first and second units in July, 2023

One of the biggest advantages of the SMV-1000 mentioned in the video is the ability to replace the K-9's engine (MTU MT 881) without changing the system equipment.

SMV-1000 First Engine Release Ceremony

In 2020, the DAPA and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy signed an MOU on technical cooperation to localize core materials and parts of the defense industry (in September). Since April 2021, the development of the K9 self-propelled gun domestic engine has begun, and a total of 32.1 billion won, including 22.8 billion won in state funds, has been invested, and in three years, about 500 engine core components have been localized and mass-produced. It is expected that the K9 self-propelled gun will further expand into the global market in the future as its domestic engine has improved performance and economy compared to the existing engine and has its own export capability.
