The Army Aviation is the army aviation branch of the Greek Armed Forces. Originally established in 1947 with light artillery spotter and liaison aircraft, the acquisition of transport helicopters from 1969 and especially of the AH-64 Apache attack helicopters in the early 1990s changed the role of the service, which was recognized as the sixth arm of the Hellenic Army in 1996. The service is headed by the Army Aviation Directorate within the Hellenic Army General Staff, and comprises the Army Aviation School and the 1st Army Aviation Brigade.

Greece will acquire Israeli-made Spike NLOS (non-line-of-sight) missiles to bolster its defense capabilities and military presence in the Aegean and Evros.

The weapon system will reportedly be installed on the country’s AH-64D attack helicopters and four Machitis-class gunboats.

The Spike NLOS is capable of hitting targets with precision at a distance of 25 kilometers (15 miles).

The largest program in terms of cost for which the Greek Army has expressed interest, concerns the Army Aviation and is related to the future of its attack helicopters. The project revolves....
  • the modernization of the 9 AH-64D Apache Longbow helicopters in version E,
  • in parallel with the supply of 9 new AH-64E Apache Guardian helicopters.
The supply of 9 AH-64E and the upgrade of the AH-64D in the same version, it is estimated by the Greek side that it will have a cost that will reach the level of 1.5 billion euros.
The deliveries will take place between October 2026 and July 2027, following the relevant US program.
