Planets must align for such high dollar cooperation between nations to happen. A nuclear submarine made solo is a more efficient weapon than a fighter jet that has to make 3 partners happy. Those nations already have F35 and have little gains with a 6 gen fighter. The bigger part of the fighting will be done by the US in any case.

Interesting, but here is the thing, if your competitors are unable to produce a 5th gen fighter jet, is there a need to develop a 6th gen ?

Short answer is yes, but there is a degree to how much money and effort needs to be put into it until time and technology has advanced to such a degree that it becomes easier to develop it.

IMO I think the aircraft is more important against sea threats. Especially considering how drone technology has taken off.

Honestly they should have tried to go for a 5th gen as baseline. Like KAAN. Halting tempest will not just kill the future of their military aviation industry, it will also kill the future of their defence policy and any potential "relative" independence from US for defence and international policy. When UK gives up and lets down GCAP partners, that's a huge blow to them. Would be happy if we could catch some of those partners though.

The is the opposition press cooking up a story when in reality there wasn't any official declination.

If I were British Defence Secretary I would choose submarines. Ultimately they provide a nuclear deterrent.
