Take note, advanced Asia Pacific militaries like the US and Japan are emphasizing long range munitions, fast jets and destroyers. While they slimmed their armies into rapid deployment force, smaller but capable.

Unlike some country who keep emphasizing a large standing army even though they don't need it while the Navy and Air Force suffers from a lack of budget.

Sorry to hurt, but you can't pin your security on a large standing army while you're geographically in the Pacific.

options are always open.

Hopefully things will change in Indonesia.

They dont have to pick a side all they have to do is strengthen themselves in all areas while making the transition into a professional force.

Biggest problem is the higher ups, politicians who are too conservative with their old thinking.

Yeah, 100%.

Island/archipelago nations must always project as much intense power as possible at sufficient long range to make up for the strategic depth they lack w.r.t physical land (for ground forces to employ).

If the opponent has brought land forces to bear on island/maritime nation (when your army/marines has to be engaged as last resort defensively), you have already lost 50% of the war by that point (as simply the initiative lies with the opponent nearly fully at this point). No to mention loss of nearly full amount of opportunity/deterrence you could have had on better/your terms further away.

Indonesia will change for the better going forward though (and the recent shifts are marked steps in that direction).

Though it would quicken pace by using Japan as role model on many things (military, economy etc) and frankly I feel it should largely copy-paste the larger approach for first half of this century.
