International Fund for Ukraine orders multiple C-UAS air defence systems from KONGSBERG​

Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (KONGSBERG) has signed a contract through the International Fund for Ukraine for the delivery of Counter Uncrewed Aerial Systems (C-UAS), which will be donated to Ukraine.


The delivery consists of several CORTEX Typhon systems, developed to counter a wide specter of UAVs with solutions to either physically harm or otherwise disable the aerial threat. The contract value is GBP 56 million.


“This contract will provide a significant capability boost for the Armed Forces of Ukraine and will support their ability to protect their people and defend their country against aerial threats,” says Eirik Lie, President of Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace.


The CORTEX Typhon C-UAS is based on field-proven software and hardware from Teledyne Flir and KONGSBERG, including surveillance system and KONGSBERG Remote Weapon Station (RWS) and CORTEX Integrated Combat Solution (ICS).


As part of the delivery, the Norwegian Government has donated Dingo 2 vehicles, KONGSBERG RWS and weapons.


The International Fund for Ukraine (IFU) was established by the UK and international partners to identify and procure critical capabilities and deliver them quickly to Ukraine. Norway and the UK are among many nations that have contributed to the fund.

KONGSBERG signs Naval Strike Missile Coastal Defence System contract with Poland worth approximately NOK 16 billion​

Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (KONGSBERG) has been awarded contract worth approximately NOK 16 billion by the Polish Ministry of National Defence to deliver four NSM (Naval Strike Missile) Coastal Defence System (CDS) squadrons


Poland was the first nation to acquire the NSM CDS capability in 2008, and then with an additional squadron in 2014. The contract award builds on more than a decade of successful cooperation between KONGSBERG, the Polish Government and Polish industry. The new deliveries will carry on into the 2030s.


“This contract is the largest single contract in the history of KONGSBERG and is an important milestone in our more than 200 year long history. Poland has been a long-standing partner, and we are proud to sign this agreement. With the changed security situation in Europe, Poland is firm in its commitment to ensure important defence capabilities, and for KONGSBERG as an industry partner, this ensures predictability to invest and continue to build capacity to deliver on these needs”, says Geir Håøy, President and CEO of KONGSBERG.

The Coastal Defence System is using NASAMS command and control with NSM control functionality. Polish industry will contribute to significant parts of the scope, including the communication system, vehicles and part of the command and control system, as well as taking part in system integration activities.


As part of the contract, KONGSBERG will provide training and technical support, including simulators, to enable Polish personnel to conduct maintenance services in Poland.


The NSM can be launched from both land- and sea-based platforms and is already in use by, or under delivery to, 12 countries. The NSM is a fifth generation Strike Missile and regarded as the most advanced naval strike missile in the world, initially developed by KONGSBERG for the Norwegian Navy. The missile’s stealth design makes it difficult to detect and its seeker system enables Autonomous Target Recognition of the targets.


The contract is dependent on approved export financing. The financing is expected to be finalized within a few weeks.

Norway orders additional Naval Strike Missile​

KONGSBERG secures NOK 1.2 billion order for deliveries to F-35 Joint Strike Fighters​

Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (“KONGSBERG”) has signed an agreement with Lockheed Martin Aeronautics worth NOK 1.2 billion to supply parts for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter Program.


The agreement with Lockheed Martin covers production lots 18-19 for Rudders, Vertical Leading Edges and Main Landing Gear Closeout panels for the three versions of the F-35, totalling more than 300 aircraft.


“KONGSBERG has been a long-standing partner to Lockheed Martin on the F-35 program and our latest agreement is testament to our strong position in this program. It also adds two more years of production from our facility, further strengthening our position for future lots beyond 2027,” says Eirik Lie, President of Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace.


Deliveries from the new order will begin in 2025 and will enable continued deliveries through 2027 from KONGSBERG’s production facility in Norway. KONGSBERG is currently working on production lots 15-17, totalling more than 450 aircraft, which will be delivered to the customer through 2025.

KONGSBERG awarded NOK 1 billion CROWS order​

Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace AS (KONGSBERG) has received an order from the US Army to deliver an additional 409 CROWS remote weapon stations, spares and support. The order has a value of USD 94 million or approximately NOK 1 billion.


The order is part of the IDIQ* frame contract awarded in October 2022, the fourth consecutive five-year contract awarded KONGSBERG for the delivery and support of the US Army Commonly Remotely Operated Weapon Station (CROWS).


“We are very pleased for the opportunity to deliver additional CROWS systems to the US Army and with the confidence our customers place in our products and our organization,” says Eirik Lie, President of Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace.


The deliveries will be manufactured and assembled at the KONGSBERG facility in Johnstown PA.


Over the past 25 years, KONGSBERG has delivered more than 22,000 Remote Weapon Systems to customers in more than 28 different nations.

New NASAMS cooperative arrangement established between Norway, RTX and KONGSBERG​

The Norwegian Ministry of Defence today announced a new collaborative arrangement between Norway, Raytheon, an RTX business, and Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace on the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System, or NASAMS. The agreement, which was signed at the Norwegian ambassador’s residence in Washington DC in October, will lay the foundation to further enhance NASAMS’ already robust and combat-proven air defence capabilities.


“We need to strengthen and further expand air defence to better protect civilian and military targets against airborne threats. The war in Ukraine has demonstrated how crucial air defence is in war. The cooperation arrangement with Norway’s KONGSBERG and Raytheon of the US lays the foundation for further developing the battle-tested NASAMS air defence system against future threats," said Bjørn Arild Gram, Norway’s Minister of Defence.


NASAMS, a highly adaptable medium-range air defence solution, is jointly developed and produced by Raytheon and Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace. Drawing on decades of experience, industrial cooperation, and significant investment made by all three parties, this new collaborative arrangement will grow the capabilities of NASAMS to ensure it keeps pace with ever-evolving complex threats.

Future acquisitions of NASAMS

The Norwegian government plans to submit two air defence projects to the Storting for parliamentary approval in the forthcoming state budget 2023 revisions under the Ministry of Defence this autumn. These are Project 7821, which will acquire missiles for NASAMS air defence, and Project 1146, which will re-acquire donated main components for NASAMS. In addition, a proposal to change the scope of Project 7628 Combat Air Defence will be presented, due to previous donations.

Norway plans to purchase NASAMS air defence and new missiles​

The Norwegian government has today announced investment plans to strengthen air defence in Norway by ordering new NASAMS air defence systems from Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (KONGSBERG).


The proposed investments include eight launcher units and four fire control centers for NASAMS, replacing equipment donated to Ukraine earlier this year. The Norwegian authorities also announced plans to buy new missiles for air defence vehicles and three different missiles for NASAMS with various range capabilities. The NASAMS missiles will be ordered directly from the supplier, Raytheon of the US.


The investments are subject to Norwegian parliamentary approval, and individual contracts will be announced when they have been concluded.


“NASAMS air defence is the result of the long-standing cooperation between the Norwegian Armed Forces, the authorities, research institutions and private industry, and today's news from the Government will contribute to the further development of NASAMS,” says Eirik Lie, President of Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace.

KONGSBERG, Norway and Germany to develop new “Super Missile”​

The Norwegian government has announced it is starting the development of the next generation strike missile, in cooperation with Germany and Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (KONGSBERG) as the lead industrial partner.


KONGSBERG has developed today's Naval Strike Missile (NSM) and will take the lead role in developing the new naval strike missile, which will complement the NSM, the Ministry of Defence said in a statement. The new missile will be known as SuperSonic Strike Missile (3SM) Tyrfing and is scheduled to be ready in 2035.


“The development of Norwegian missiles is a success story. The Norwegian defence industry, with KONGSBERG at the forefront, has unique expertise and produces world-class missiles. The project will continue to extend this strategically important expertise, so we can continue to develop missiles that are attractive to other NATO countries and close allies,” said Defence Minister Bjørn Arild Gram.


“The new strike missile project will ensure that Norway retains its position as a world leader in missile production, based on seamless cooperation between industry, governments and research establishments. The project will create new Norwegian jobs, while offering Norway and its allies improved defence capabilities,” said Eirik Lie, President of Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace.


Today's NSM was developed in the early 2000s and delivered to the Norwegian Armed Forces from 2011 to 2015. Today, the missile has been selected by 13 countries. The development of the new missile is a collaborative project between Norway and Germany and is planned to be deployed on naval vessels in both countries.


The government is proposing to initiate and complete the initial design phase of the project, before returning to the Norwegian Parliament with a recommendation to continue the project.

KONGSBERG awarded framework agreement for the maintenance of Norwegian frigates worth up to NOK 17 billion​

Kongsberg Naval Services (KONGSBERG), a company owned by Kongsberg Maritime and Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace, has been awarded a strategic framework agreement with the Norwegian Defence Material Agency for operational support, maintenance and life-extending services on Norway's frigates. The agreement has a total value of up to NOK 17 billion for services delivered over the lifetime of the agreement - assumed to be up to 2040.


KONGSBERG has been selected as the main supplier for carrying out management and ship technical maintenance, modifications and life-extending activities on Norway’s Fridtjof Nansen-class frigates.


“Together with our strong Norwegian suppliers, we can offer efficient and sustainable maintenance services to strengthen the Armed Forces' operational capability and preparedness, and at the same time provide support to Norway’s allied forces,” said Geir Håøy, President and CEO of Kongsberg Gruppen.


KONGSBERG will coordinate activities with partners through integrated and long-term cooperation with the Norwegian Armed Forces and the Norwegian Defence Material Agency. The company has formed a constellation consisting of the shipyards Westcon Yards and Coast Center Base (CCB), as well as WilNor Governmental Services (WGS) and Wilhelmsen Ship Management (WSM). KONGSBERG also has a cooperation agreement with Navantia to ensure support services from the shipyard that originally built the ships.


“Maritime industry, defence technology and digitization are KONGSBERG's main pillars. In this framework agreement with the Norwegian Armed Forces, these are united to optimize operations and increase technical availability for the Norwegian frigates throughout their lifetime, while at the same time facilitating predictable operating and maintenance costs,” said Håøy.


Kongsberg Naval Services (KNS) has been established for the purpose of delivering maintenance services as described in the contract with the Norwegian Defence Material Agency (NDMA). The company is owned 50 percent each by Kongsberg Maritime and Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace. The contract between NDMA and KNS is expected to be signed later in December 2023.

KONGSBERG signs new contract for Naval Strike Missiles to Spain​

Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (KONGSBERG) has signed a contract with the government of Lithuania for the delivery of more NASAMS air defence systems. The EUR 200 million (about NOK 2.3 billion) contract will provide Lithuania with the latest technology and increased air defence capabilities.


As part of the contract, Lithuania will also modernize parts of the NASAMS equipment the country acquired in 2017. With this modernization, Lithuania will have the most modern and efficient configuration of this advanced air defence system.


“We are significantly strengthening Lithuania's air defence capabilities. The main reason for the decision is that the NASAMS system is already successfully operated by the Lithuanian Armed Forces, so the additional acquisition of NASAMS will not create integration problems," said Greta Monika Tučkutė, Vice Minister of National Defence.


“Expanding its air defence capability with more NASAMS supports Lithuania's ability to more effectively combat modern air threats and also strengthens the country's partnership with NATO,” said Eirik Lie, President of Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace.


The system consists of Raytheon’s Sentinel radar and three advanced missile variants, as well as KONGSBERG's Fire Distribution Center (FDC) and multi-missile launchers.

KONGSBERG signs new contract for Naval Strike Missiles to Spain​

The Spanish Navy has today awarded Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (KONGSBERG) a contract worth EUR 305 million for the delivery of Naval Strike Missiles (NSM). The first ship class to be equipped with NSM is the F-110 class frigate, which is currently under construction by Navantia. The missiles are intended to be deployed on the F-100 frigates during their Mid-Life Update, as well as on future ships.


The Spanish Navy, which selected NSM in 2022, is acquiring the missiles through the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA). This is the first missile contract for Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace to be handled by NSPA.


KONGSBERG will, in parallel, sign a cooperation agreement Directorate General for the Armament and Material (DiGAM) as a foundation to develop an industrial plan that will maximize Spanish industry cooperation and involvement. This includes the possibility to become part of the global missile supply chain, and a proposal for the establishment of a full life cycle maintenance capacity for NSM at the Rota naval Base, in coordination with local industry.


KONGSBERG expects that the contract will provide a regional foothold for their missile programs, and the parties hope that the contract involving Spanish Navy, KONGSBERG and NSPA will contribute to further cooperation between all the NATO members that use NSM.

Norway acquires new NASAMS air defence systems​

The Norwegian government has ordered new NASAMS air defence systems from Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (KONGSBERG), which will strengthen the country’s defence capabilities to combat aerial threats. The contract has a value of approximately NOK 1.4 billion, with expected deliveries in 2026-2027.

The contract with the Norwegian Defence Material Agency includes new multi-missile canister launchers and new Fire Distribution Centers for NASAMS, replacing equipment previously donated to Ukraine. The delivery will provide Norway with the latest generation of NASAMS, developed to meet current and future threats.


“These are investments that secure the country. The war in Ukraine has shown how important air defence is, and before Christmas the Norwegian government was able to present a record order for air defence to the Norwegian Armed Forces. We have taken extraordinary measures to speed up the acquisition. The contract for the re-acquisition of donated material is the first step,” said Norway’s Defence Minister Bjørn Arild Gram

The original Norwegian Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System, or NASAMS, was delivered to the Norwegian armed forces in the 1990s. Today there are currently 13 nations in the NASAMS user group.

NASAMS is one of the most flexible solutions in the market and covers a wide range of air defence needs.

KONGSBERG investing in increased missile production capacity​

Financial support from the Norwegian authorities and EU’s ASAP program contributes to Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (KONGSBERG) investing in more than NOK 640 million to increase their missile production capacity.


The security policy situation in Europe has increased the need to ensure the availability and supply of ammunition and missiles. Last year, the European commission launched the ASAP program (Act in Support of Ammunition Production) to support the industry’s capability to increase the production capacity for ammunition and missiles.


During the last years, KONGSBERG has implemented several measures to increase the production capacity, such as the investment of a new missile factory in the city of Kongsberg, opening this summer. Now the capacity increases further – with the support from EU and Norway.
KONGSBERG’s investment includes equipment and machines to increase the capacity in the new missile factory, as well as a new facility to increase the production capacity for sensor components. In addition, there will be investments in the supply chain in order to ensure future supplies.


KONGSBERG plans to invest a total of NOK 640 million, of which the Norwegian authorities contributes with NOK 200 million and EU contributes with EUR 10 million.


“The support from the Norwegian and European authorities contributes to our ability to implement concrete measures to further strengthen KONGSBERG’s missile production capacity, reduce lead times and enhance the supply chain,” says Eirik Lie, President of Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace.


The Naval Strike Missile (NSM) is currently used by 14 nations, of which 11 are from NATO or the EU. These new investments will strengthen the already close collaboration on the NSM production across the European borders, by further developing an even more resilient missile ecosystem, to ensure supply and preparedness.

KONGSBERG to deliver PROTECTOR remote weapon stations to Sweden and Finland​

Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (KONGSBERG) has signed a contract with Patria for the delivery of PROTECTOR remote weapon stations on more than 300 Patria vehicles that the Finnish company is delivering to Sweden and Finland.


The contract has a value of about NOK 1.2 billion.KONGSBERG will deliver its PROTECTOR RS4 weapon stations to Patria’s Common Armoured Vehicle Systems (CAVS), which is a well protected and highly mobile modular 6x6 vehicle. Patria announced on 20 March a contract to deliver 321 such CAVS vehicles to the Swedish armed forces. Deliveries will begin from 2025 and last into the 2030s.

KONGSBERG to deliver PROTECTOR remote weapon stations to Sweden and Finland

Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (“KONGSBERG”) has signed a contract with Patria for the delivery of PROTECTOR remote weapon stations on more than 300 Patria vehicles that the Finnish company is delivering to Sweden and Finland.
