Deadly clashes calm in Libya’s Tripoli after release of detained commander

Intense fighting between rival military factions in Libya’s capital resumed for a second day amid reports of injuries and deaths.

The military commander at the centre of clashes between rival militias in the Libyan capital has been freed, a day after his detention triggered the worst violence Tripoli has seen this year that has killed at least 27.

Mahmoud Hamza, the commander of the 444 Brigade, was released on Tuesday evening by the Special Deterrence Force, according to sources in each faction who spoke to the Reuters news agency.

The fighting appeared to have calmed in the aftermath of Hamza’s release, residents in the city said.

Medical authorities said at least 27 people were killed and 106 were injured as a result of the fighting.

Civilians had been trapped in their homes and unable to escape the violence, the country’s health ministry earlier said.

The death toll from the clashes remains unclear, but a medical unit linked to the Defence Ministry said on Tuesday that it had recovered three bodies from Furnaj, Ain Zara and Tarik Shok districts.

The Health Ministry appealed to citizens to donate blood to help casualties. Usama Ali, a spokesperson for the Red Crescent ambulance service, said that at least 19 people had been injured and more than 20 families evacuated from areas affected by the fighting so far.

Fighting broke out between the 444 Brigade and the Special Deterrence Force late Monday evening, according to local media, after Hamza was allegedly detained by the Special Deterrence Force at an airport in Tripoli earlier Monday, media reported.

The ministry urged the warring sides to allow ambulance and emergency teams to enter the affected areas, primarily in the south of the city, and for blood to be sent to nearby hospitals.

Libya is fifth biggest gas exporter via pipelines to Europe

The latest data on energy supply to Europe has revealed that Libyan gas exports to Europe through pipelines came in fifth place among the largest five exporters.

A map of gas flows through pipelines to European Union countries until August 13, which did not include liquefied natural gas shipments, showed that each of the gas exports coming from Norway, Algeria, Russia and Azerbaijan preceded Libya, according to data posted on X by the gas industries expert at the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OAPEC), Wael Abdelmouti.

Libya recorded a gas pumping rate to the European Union countries through pipelines of about 5.3 million cubic meters per day, while the total gas exports flowing from the five countries to the European Union amounted to 453 million cubic meters per day as of August 13.

Meanwhile, the Libyan government was seeking to increase energy exports to Europe by opening the doors for investment to the private sector and by intensifying partnerships with foreign companies.

Debeibah in Ain Zara.jpg

Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah inspected neighbourhoods in the Ain Zara district, which saw, last night, intensive fighting between two powerful military factions.

The detention of a military commander by a rival armed group on Monday sparked a fight that continued until Tuesday.

The PM's media office said Dbeibah visited the affected areas to get a first-hand understanding of the situation in the affected areas.

During his visit, the Prime Minister assessed the damage to public and private property and instructed the Ministry of Local Government to take immediate action to compensate residents for any losses or property damage.
