Turkey ready to do 'whatever is necessary' in Eastern Med

Escalation in Eastern Mediterranean due to Greek, Greek Cypriot approach, not Turkey's, says foreign minister

Turkey ready to do 'whatever is necessary' in Eastern Med

ANKARA
Turkey’s foreign minister on Tuesday warned Greece against taking missteps in the Eastern Mediterranean, saying Turkey is ready to do “whatever is necessary” to protect its legitimate interests in the region.

Mevlut Cavusoglu’s remarks came at a joint news conference with his German counterpart Heiko Maas in the capital Ankara after they discussed a variety of issues, including the COVID-19 outbreak, developments in Libya, and especially the Eastern Mediterranean.
He also urged Greece to not to “put itself at risk” by rising to the bait of “some countries” in the Eastern Mediterranean.
He did not name any countries, but Greece recently worked with France and Egypt against Turkish maritime foreign policy.
Cavusoglu stressed that the recent escalation in tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean is due to the approach of Greece and Greek Cypriot administration, not Turkey's.

During the news conference, Maas also underlined that escalation in the Eastern Mediterranean helps neither the EU, nor Turkey, nor Greece.
This week Turkey and later Greece sent out conflicting alerts on energy exploration and military exercises in the Mediterranean.
Greece has disputed Turkey’s current energy exploration in the Eastern Mediterranean, trying to box in Turkish maritime territory based on small islands near the Turkish coast.
Turkey – the country with the longest coastline on the Mediterranean – has sent out drill ships to explore for energy on its continental shelf, saying that both Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) have rights in the region.
Dialogue for fair sharing of these resources will be win-win for all sides, say Turkish officials.

Greece Navtex is much much bigger then ours, that means you have more and more ships and fighters then us. Other whise you will not be able to defend it :) . Or they are trying to divide our navy forces, but it is stupid action to trust other countries in case of war.

Correct assesment, I think the attempt to push Greece forward as a sacrificial peon is going to have adverse affect.

Turkey made many fundamental mistakes and ended up being in this current situation. If this is going to be the end of NATO it couldn’t have come in a more opportune moment.

Edit: I believe Turkey needs to build a case file of Aegean sea and raise our entire claim. However I think this is also what the greeks are trying to make us to. In a way force us to give up the islands and the sea. So sticking to what is rightfully ours and weathering this illegal pressure is all we can do. If we manage to land eez deal with Egypt. We’ll be off some of the pressure. But this should have been done long ago. I don’t see why Egypt would make EEZ deal with us when we have been stuck up for so long. Nothing is going to happen in that area as long as we cause the dispute so the pressure is on us.

Dynamism continues to increase in the Mediterranean.

Turkey, south of the island of Crete has published Navtex for military exercises.
Greece has published a Navtex containing the work area of Oruç Reis.
Yavuz, Barbaros Hayrettin Pasha and Oruç Reis continue their work.
It is international waters, EEZs exists for economical operations and doesn't provide any rights on sovereignty of those areas.
I am not quite sure whose NAVTEX will be valid, but from neutral point of view, ignoring the disputed EEZ claims/maritime boundaries, Greece's NAVTEX was announced after NAVTEX for Oruç Reis, thus it can be considered provocative, and if they "accidentally" cause damage on Oruç Reis, which is technically a civilian research ship, the consequences will be on international level and all parties participating in the exercises are aware of this.
So, the NAVTEX area has been kept large as possible and only politically support their claims on East Med., they will morelikely do exercises in a limited area for PR.

PARIS (Reuters) - France is joining military exercises with Italy, Greece and Cyprus in the Eastern Mediterranean amid a worsening dispute between Turkey and Greece over energy resources in the region, Armed Forces Minister Florence Parly said on Wednesday.

Tensions between Turkey and Greece escalated after Ankara sent its Oruc Reis survey vessel to disputed eastern Mediterranean waters this month, a move Athens has called illegal.

“The eastern Mediterranean is turning into an area of tension. Respect for international law must be the rule and not the exception,” Parly said on Twitter, adding that it “should not be a playground for the ambitions of some.”

Three Rafale fighter jets and a warship equipped with a helicopter will be part of the joint military exercises, she said.

Relations between France and Turkey have soured in recent months over Ankara’s actions in NATO, Libya and the Mediterranean.

President Emmanuel Macron has called for the EU to show solidarity with Greece and Cyprus in the dispute over natural gas reserves off Cyprus and the extent of their continental shelves and pushed for further sanctions at EU level, although there are divisions in the bloc over the issue.

Germany has sought to mediate between the Ankara and Athens. On Tuesday their respective foreign ministers said they wanted to solve the matter through dialogue following talks with German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas. However, each warned that they would continue to defend their rights in the region.

“Our message is simple: priority to dialogue, cooperation and diplomacy so that the Eastern Mediterranean becomes an area of stability and respect for international law,” Parly said.
