111 ASW Squadron
Sea King helicopters are the oldest platforms of PN Air Arm. They were first acquired from UK in 1974 forming the pioneer 111 Squadron of Naval Aviation. Later on, additional helicopters were also acquired from UK in 2018 and later from Qatar in 2022. Today, PN has a sizeable fleet of Sea King helicopters which perform a variety of roles including Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW), Anti-Surface Vessel (ASV), Search and Rescue (SAR), Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR), Troop transfer, Para Drop and Maritime Interdiction Operations (MIOs). Equipped with modern sensors, Anti-Ship Missiles, Depth Charges, Torpedoes and Sniper Rifles, Sea King helicopters continue to defend Pakistan’s sea frontiers for over five decades.
222 ASW Squadron
222 Squadron was established in1996 with Lynx helicopters which were replaced with Z9EC helicopters in 2009. Z9EC helicopters are the work horses of PN Rotary Wing Air Arm and perform a variety of roles including Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW), Reconnaissance, Command& Liaison as well as embarked operations onboard a variety of PN Ships. They are capable of flying at high speeds making them idea for Search and Rescue (SAR). Fitted with Radar and a Variable Depth Sonar (VDS), these helicopters are the mainstay of PN embarked ASW capability.
333 ASW Squadron
333 Squadron is a Rotary Wing Training squadron of PN Air Arm and consists of Alouette helicopters. These single engine helicopters play a vital role in training and confidence building of young Rotary Wing pilots and prepare them for advanced twin-engine conversions. In addition to training, these helicopters are capable to fire Depth Charges and carry out Armed Recce using their onboard machine guns. Due to their capability to operate on high altitudes, Alouette helicopters were the key participants during rescue operations in the aftermath of 2005 Earthquake. These helicopters also operate from PN Ships and are capable to undertake Search and Rescue (SAR) operations using their onboard Recue Hoist.
28 ASW Squadron
28 Maritime Strike Squadron was established on 6 December 1996 with initial acquisition of 3 x P3C Orion Long Range Maritime Patrol (LRMP) aircraft. These four engine, long endurance, all weatheraircraft are the fastest turbopropsand perform a variety of operations including Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW), Anti-Surface Vessel (ASV) and reconnaissance. Due to their capability to carry a large number of Anti-Ship Missiles and Torpedoes, they are also known as ‘Flying Destroyers’. Manned by highly motivated and trained aircrew, these aircraft continue to act as eyes and ears of Pakistan Navy and have been responsible for deterring enemy submarines from Pakistan’s Sea Frontiers on a number of occasions.
29 ASW Squadron
29 ASW Squadron was raised in 1976 with 3 x Atlantic aircraft from France. Atlantics were highly capable Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) and Anti-Surface Vessel (ASV) aircraft that served Pakistan Navy till 2012. Thereafter, 29 ASW Squadron has been home of ATR aircraft which have been marinized from Germany as per PN requirements. Equipped with state of the art sensors, ATRs are the work horses of PN Aerial Surveillance effort and augment maintenance of Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA). ATRs are also employed for Ferry, Para Drops, Training and Sea and Rescue (SAR).
47 UAV Squadron
In line with the modern technological trends, Pakistan Navy has inducted a number of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in Naval Aviation. In this regard, 47 UAV Squadron is the first unmanned squadron of PN Air Arm and was raised on 14 February 2013.
47 Squadron is home to tactical UAVs including Scan Eagle from USA and LUNA NG from Germany. These UAVs regularly operate in Coastal and Creeks Area of Pakistan and assist in maintenance of Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA), Fisheries Monitoring and augment Security Operations.
47 Squadron also operates CH-4 Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) UCAVs from China. Equipped with state of the art radar and optical sensors, these UCAVs operate at par with manned aircraft and augment PN surveillance efforts utilizing Manned Unmanned Teaming (MUM-T) concept. CH-4 UCAVs are also equipped with Anti-Armour Missiles capable of striking targets on land as well as at sea.
