Russia claims violation of its territorial waters by US Navy submarine
Feburary. 13 2022Russia's Defense Ministry says it summoned a military attache at the US Embassy in Moscow to protest what it called a violation of its territorial waters by a US Navy submarine.
The ministry said on Saturday that a nuclear-powered submarine belonging to the US Navy was spotted in the area of routine naval exercises of Russia's Pacific Fleet in the territorial waters near Urup Island of the Kuril Islands.
The ministry also said the US submarine ignored warnings to leave the waters. It added that the submarine departed after a Russian vessel used what it called "appropriate means" against the submarine. The ministry did not give details of the measures.
The ministry says it summoned a US military attache on Saturday and handed a note claiming that the US Navy's provocative actions posed a threat to Russia's national security.
A spokesperson for US Indo-Pacific Command told NHK that there is no truth to Russian claims of US Navy operations in Russia's territorial waters.
The spokesperson said the regional command will not comment on the precise location of its submarines, but its planes and vessels operate safely in international waters.
Russia's protest comes amid heightened tensions over Ukraine. Observers say the move is aimed at giving an impression that the US is threatening Russia's security.
