Russia invites S.Korea to invest in Kuril Islands

Russia's deputy prime minister has invited South Korean businesspeople to invest in a tariff-free zone on an island chain that Russia calls the Kuril Islands.

The chain includes four islands Japan claims and calls the Northern Territories. Russia controls the islands.

The Russian move apparently comes in response to economic sanctions Japan imposed with Western nations against Moscow after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Yury Trutnev visited Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk in the Sakhalin region of Russia's Far East on Thursday.

Trutnev met South Korean investors who plan to build a hotel at a ski resort in Sakhalin as part of a government-backed project. He said Russia is introducing a duty-free zone on the islands and that he hopes the South Koreans will be interested in investing.

Last December, Trutnev made a similar pitch during an online meeting with South Korea's then-deputy prime minister.

Russia has recently been stepping up efforts to actively invite countries such as South Korea and China to invest in developing the islands.
