To date, Russia and China have rejected an outright military alliance in favor of a strategic partnership. Vadim Savitsky / Defense Ministry Press Service / TASS

President Vladimir Putin said Thursday that a future military alliance with China can’t be ruled out but is not needed right now, the Associated Press reported.

Speaking at the Valdai Discussion Club, Putin said that Russia has stepped up military cooperation with China through joint military exercises and the sharing of sensitive Russian military technologies.

“Without any doubt, our cooperation with China is bolstering the defense capability of China’s army,” Putin said via videoconference with international foreign policy experts.
Moscow’s military ties with Beijing could someday deepen further, he added, noting: “The time will show how it will develop… we won’t exclude it.”
Asked about a hypothetical Russian-Chinese military alliance, Putin said: “We don’t need it, but, theoretically, it’s quite possible to imagine it.”
To date, Russia and China have rejected an outright military alliance in favor of a strategic partnership. Russia “pivoted” toward China after its annexation of Crimea in 2014 triggered Western sanctions and sunk relations to post-Cold War lows.
China and Germany are headed for political and economic superpower status while the role of the United States, as well as Britain and France, has waned, Putin said.
Putin’s comments on sharing sensitive technology with China come amid a wave of criminal prosecutions against Russian scientists accused of passing state secrets to China in recent years.

On the eve of the 20th anniversary Rosoboronexport (Russia’s national defence trade state mediator and Rostec subsidiary) several interesting figures have been disclosed. Since 4 November 2000, when the company received the exclusive right to export the entire range of military equipment, it has signed over 26,000 contracts to deliver hardware worth over US$180bn to 122 countries. As several enterprises keep the right to independence following deals with foreign customers, the sum above should be increased by approximately 15 per cent. As a result, Russia has been consistently ranked as a runner up among the world’s arms traders.

According to Alexander Mikheev, Rosoboronexport CEO, the above figure includes US$85bn in aviation equipment, while air defence and army sales exceed US$30bn for each of these services, followed by US$28bn for the Navy. The remaining US$7bn should be counted for the special forces, space, dual purpose technology as well as civil arms and commercial goods. These figures also include the construction of infrastructure facilities and military personnel training. The Russian defence trader has also established a large portfolio for licensed production and joint ventures in India, Jordan, Malaysia, Vietnam and several other countries.

Rosoboronexport has announced its intention to introduce 50 plus new modern weapons systems on the global arms market in the next five to seven years. Potential “bestsellers” include the ARMATA based armoured vehicle family, Su-57E fifth-generation fighter jet, Ka-52 shipborne and Mi-28E night-capable helicopters and Surface to Air Missile Systems.

The company claims that it intends to extend technology transfer and joint production to different nations as well as civil products promotion.

During Tuesday’s meeting, the heads of the BRICS member states – Brazil, Russia, China and South Africa – touched on issues of global importance, including the war in Syria, the fight against international terrorism, and the production and distribution of a coronavirus vaccine.
BRICS countries want to prepare a legally binding tool to prevent an arms race in space, reads a declaration adopted at the group's 12th summit, which is being held on 17 November in Moscow.
"We emphasise the urgent need to agree on a multilateral legally binding accord that can fill the gap in the international framework regarding space, including an agreement that will prevent countries from deploying weapons, threatening, or using force against objects in outer space", the BRICS group said in a statement.
Last year, the United States created a sixth branch of the military called the Space Force, a decision that was criticised both domestically and abroad. Opponents of the move say it may result in an arms race in space, which may threaten the world.

Moscow has repeatedly stressed that it opposes the deployment of any types of weapons in space and has urged Washington to work together to prevent a new arms race.

During the 12th summit of the BRICS group, which was held earlier today, the leaders of the member states discussed issues of global importance. In the declaration adopted at Tuesday’s meeting, BRICS also spoke about:

  • the need to adopt a UN convention on the fight against international terrorism;
  • a renewal of talks on the Biological Weapons Convention. The group stressed that it is necessary to adopt a legally bindingprotocol that would create a verification mechanism to monitor how signatories honour their obligations;
  • the importance of the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty and called on the parties to agree on an extension of the accord;
  • a diplomatic resolution of the Korea issue;

I would like to remind you that if you have Russian speaking ppl (former Soviet states) then the Russian influence is greater, it is IMO a lot easier to breakapart these nations than a single cultural nation.

Look at how Ukraine suffers because of this. That is party why the Turkic nations are trying to return back to their own cultural identity along with their own language. But you can still find ppl who thinks Soviet was the best thing.

Once internal disturbances starts you can send mercenaries to turn it inside out.

IMO NATO needs to work on faster reaction towards hybrid warfare of this kind, Insurgents.

Putin is actually very pragmatic. All his stance against the West is merely a PR (same as West stance against Putin).

That's why he is "fighting" against West in countries that no one cares about.

No one will care about the baltics either, I expect him to make a push around the end of this decade.

The attack on Baltic is the attack on both EU and NATO. No one will allow it.

What will NATO and EU do about it? The americans made it clear with their moves that their attention is on china so I dont think that the americans will pick up a fight with Russia for the sake of the baltics and possibly Scandinavia while also being busy with China.

I also dont think that NATO will be around in 10 years, they are already looking for a purpose of that alliance with NATO 2030 and around that timeline we will see the end of that alliance. The EU is also irrelevant because it primarily consists of small, irrelevant and weak states and they wont stand a chance against the Russians.

Russia is basically a German colony: it exports resources imports nuclear waste and Mercedes cars. Russia will never do what is against German interests.

U can also check what happened when Russians attacked US allied SDF zone in Syria.

Apart from that, the Russian top diplomat drew attention of his Norwegian counterpart to the worsening security situation in the Far North

MOSCOW, January 19. /TASS/. Oslo’s military activity and NATO infrastructure’s movement closer to the Russian borders may adversely impact the Arctic region, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Tuesday during online talks with his Norwegian counterpart, Ine Eriksen Soreide.

"The Russian side stressed that Norway’s increased military activity and the movement of NATO’s infrastructure to our birder are fraught with negative consequences for the Arctic. Hope was expressed that traditional good neighborly relations between our countries will be revived," the Russian foreign ministry said.

Apart from that, the Russian top diplomat drew attention of his Norwegian counterpart to the worsening security situation in the Far North. "The sides discussed the entire spectrum of issues of bilateral relations, which now leave much to be desired. The Russian side pointed to the ungrounded accusations against Russia of staging cyberattack, spy scandals and the worsened situation in the sphere of security in the Far North, including in the Russian-Norwegian border zone," the ministry said, adding that the Russian foreign minister called on Oslo to begin dialogue with Moscow to remove its concerns about Norway’s commitment to the 1920 Svalbard, or Spitsbergen, Treaty.

The ministers also discussed the current agenda of the UN Security Council, where Norway is a non-permanent member in 2021-2022. Among the topics discussed was the situation in Syria, Afghanistan, Sudan, and other countries. The ministers reiterated mutual commitment to constructive joint work within the United Nations Security Council.

"The sides noted positive dynamics of cooperation in regional formats, such as the Barents Euro-Arctic Council, where Norway currently holds presidency, the Council of the Baltic Sea States, and the Northern Dimension. Russia is set for active cooperation with Norwegian partners within the Arctic Council, including in the light of our country’s presidency in it in 2021-2023, as a key platform for collective decisions on the Arctic-related matters," the ministry said, recalling that Russia will hand over presidency in the Arctic Council to Norway in 2023.

The sides stressed the necessity of overcoming negative dynamics in the trade-and-economic cooperation and expanding sectoral ties.

How I wish more ASEAN countries could be like Norway in regards to SCS, when you're small it's best to be in an alliance so that the bully will not pick you up one by one.

I don't like to say this, but I think most ASEAN countries are brain dead regarding their security.

Navalny chose a great moment to present that work of his to the world. First they try to kill him and second he gets arrested right when he came back to Moscow... His counter attack is making Putin and his clique very angry right now though. 😁

In a small documentary Putin’s aura of an ex 007 super spy and a patriot man working for Russia’s interests only gets ruined.
