In November 1993, the governments of Greece and Cyprus proclaimed the so called Defence Doctrine of the Single Area, characterized by the defensive character and to prevent or deal with any aggression against one or both parties. With the proclamation of the doctrine, the emphasizes was of the commitment of Greece to consider as a cause of war (casus beli) any Turkish attempt to march on Cyprus. Cyprus in collaboration with Greece, is furthering its military build-up in South Cyprus within the framework of the so-called Joint Military Doctrine.
The doctrine meant coordinating the two countries' armaments and defense plans, and creating military infrastructure in Cyprus that could be used by Greek forces.
Unfortunately, with the great economic crises that hit the two countries, this doctrine was forgotten. Both countries have stopped arming themselves despite the fact that the Turkish threat is real and growing. After all, the Turkish military armament frenzy is obvious, especially in the last 10 years.
The question is what will be the response of the two countries and especially of Cyprus to the threat called Turkey?
Is the verbal support of the international factor enough?
The answer is clear: of course it is not enough. When you are threatened militarily, you must also equip yourself militarily to deal with the threat. Cyprus must realize that in order to survive, it must increase its defense spending in an accounting manner.
Proposals such as the network-centric cooperation between the Cypriot and Greek air defense must become a reality. The strengthening of the anti-aircraft umbrella of Cyprus will be done through the acquisition for the needs of the National Guard of a defense anti-missile system, capable of dealing with any threat that will fly over the national airspace of Cyprus.
Below is example of the network-centric cooperation between French ASTER 30 SAMP/T , Rafale and FDI frigate.
