After Jamdani, Shatranji, a traditional fabric of Rangpur, has now been recognised as a Geographical Indication (GI) product of Bangladesh.

The Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks (DPDT) has registered Shatranji as the country's GI product, DPDT said in a press release today. Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) got the certificate as the GI product of Shatranji after another traditional fabric Jamdani, it said. On July 11, 2019, BCIC applied to the DPDT for registration of Shatranji as a geographical indication product.

Later, Bangladesh Forms and Publications Office in Tejgaon of Dhaka published 'Shatranji of Rangpur' in GI Journal NO-07 in November last year and in this context, DPDT has given the Geographical Indication Certificate of Shatranji, DPDT said. Earlier traditional fabric Jamdani has been recognised as a GI product of the country on November 15, 2016, facilitating its weavers to brand the indigenous cloth in a better way at home and abroad.
