Taipei, Oct. 8 (CNA) One soldier was killed while another was injured when a tank crashed into an embankment following a drill in the offshore island county of Kinmen on Thursday, military sources said that day.

The M41A3 tank listed under the Kinmen Defense Command's Lieyu Garrison Battalion was heading back to its base at the conclusion of the drill and as it was driving along a road near Lieyu Township, crashed into the embankment at around 3:15 p.m, according to a press release issued by the Kinmen Defense Command.
Two military personnel aboard the tank -- a sergeant surnamed Lin (林) and a tank driver corporal surnamed Liu (劉) -- were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment, it said.

Lin was later pronounced dead in the hospital, while Liu suffered non-life-threatening injuries, it said.
The Army has formed an ad hoc task force to investigate the incident, it added.

The command's press statement did not give a possible reason for the crash, but local media reports said it was likely due to speeding.
The tank rammed into a utility pole before crashing into the embankment and overturning, reports said.

Lin was trapped under the tank following the crash and had no vital signs when he was pulled from the wreckage, while Liu suffered minor injuries to his hands, according to media reports.
