Why though? Arent there more efficient Base layouts nowadays?

It's an interesting choice. It was deemed to be more effective against the modus operandi used by terrorist groups in the area (Several VBIEDs to make a breach and then large number of vehicles/motorcycles to overwehlm their adversary),when attacking forward operating bases, especially those of the partner countries.

The security personnel have to take position in the smaller circle right? I personally approve such design. There are a lot of positives to the big circle trenches. The place between the outer and inner part is simply a death zone. As you said VBIEDs are very big problem in these kind of environment. That kind of position is not only preventing the crossing of VBIEDs but also is putting infantry out of hand grenade range. That base needs only good recon and with that design it is just perfect in my eyes. Thanks to the flat terrain this will be not a problem for the French capabilities and targets can be identified and neutralized from far away. In Operation Euphrates Shield Turkey also saw the problem of not establishing proper outpost security and perimeters. The mistakes there wrote its history with blood unfortunately.

Star Forts have basically made a comeback interesting to be honest.

Didnt expect this supposedly old design to be still useful in this century. ☺
