The Hellenic Center for Marine Research (ELKETHE), in collaboration with the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), is proceeding with the reconstruction, extension and modernization of the Research Vessel "Friendship".
The upgrade of the infrastructure is an important event for Greece, as "Filia", in collaboration with the other two vessels of the Greek research fleet, the "Aegean" and the "Alkyon", and the planned construction of a new research vessel, will upgrade the potential of oceanographic research on climate change, the promotion of the ecosystem approach to marine management, but also the exploitation of marine resources.
The upgrade of "Filia" is funded with 1.3 million euros by the Ministry of Development & Investment and European resources, under the RePHIL program .
The program also includes the modernization of the equipment of the entire Greek research fleet as well as the financing of the use of the "Filia" E / S by other bodies, raising the total amount of the program to 3,133,000 euros.
The works for E / S FILIA have started from October 2020 and are expected to last until March 2021 at Papila Shipyard.
With the completion of the transformation, actions of communication, promotion and free use of the E / S by third parties will follow.
