COTABATO CITY: An armed confrontation ensued between operating troops of Joint Task Force Central and a local terrorist group in Maguindanao on Friday.

"Amid the intensified conduct of focused military operations, soldiers encountered, more or less, 30 members of the Daulah Islamiyah-Hassan Group, led by Salahuddin Hassan, aka Orak in Barangay Salman, Ampatuan, Maguindanao at noon [on] Friday," said Lt. Gen. Corleto Vinluan Jr., commander, Western Mindanao Command.

Heavy skirmishes, which lasted for about 30 minutes, resulted in the death of one terrorist, identified as Muslimin Kulas Tagal, and the seizure of several war materials, Vinluan said.

Based on the followup report, troops were still in pursuit of the fleeing extremists even as reinforcements were being deployed to establish blockades in possible withdrawal routes.

"We continue to intensify the conduct of focused military operations to restrict the movements of the terrorists and preempt their terror ploys," said Joint Task Force Central Commander Maj. Gen. Juvymax Uy.

Vinluan commended the Joint Task Force Central for its untiring dedication to its duties. He encouraged the task force to press on until all armed groups in the region were dismantled.

"With the support of our fellow peace advocates and the community, we are optimistic that we will soon be able to crush all the remaining enemies of the state," said Vinluan.
