AFU stopped using US tactics - NYT

August 3, 2023, 04:23

The White House hoped that the Armed Forces of Ukraine would demonstrate during the counteroffensive that "the American way of warfare is superior to the Russian one."

The Ukrainian brigades of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, who were trained in NATO countries, stopped using American tactics of warfare when attacking at the front. The Ukrainian military returned to tactics "which they know best." On Wednesday, August 2, writes The New York Times.

The publication reports that the White House hoped that nine brigades numbering about 36,000 people during the counteroffensive would demonstrate that "the American way of warfare is superior to the Russian one."

"We are talking about the decentralization of control of different military units in battle," the publication points out.

It is noted that Ukrainian commanders changed tactics and focused on wearing down Russian forces with artillery and long-range missiles.

"On the battlefield, the Ukrainian military faced significant mining of the territory and constant shelling from artillery and aviation," the article says.

As the authors of the material write, NATO's hopes for the speedy liberation of the territories did not come true.

"Nevertheless, in the event of a breakthrough in the defense lines of the Russians, the Ukrainian military can still use the tactics of the United States and NATO," the NYT points out.

Recall that since the beginning of June, the Ukrainian army began active offensive operations. Since then, up to a dozen settlements and more than 200 square meters have been liberated. km of territory.

Whatever tactics Ukraine ought to use, it needs to get some achievements fast
Only 4 months are left until the rainy season begins again and I see no significwnt achievement whatsoever
Without significant achievements by the end of the year, Europe may lose their desire in further financing the war

It hurts to admit, but Putin must be laughing behind the scenes rn

So Russia is imperialist....because some random Russian has a beef with a Taxi driver from Kazakhstan. The lady really need to calm down.

@Gary the importance of modern triple A SHORAD complementing MRSAM batteries should not be underestimated.

Otherwise you will risk loosing multi-million dollars AD systems to $35000-40000 cheap kamikaze drones.

No way triple AAA is the answer for this, it still has a role but more and more secondary. For one you could not afford that many guns all over the place, and you'll find the ammo expenditure will increase incrementally.

Directed energy solution is the future of mass anti drone warfare.

Yes, Tripple A is the solution.

Countries like BD (or even Indoensia) are very unlikely to develop adequate directed energy weapons in next 20 years and mass produce them in numbers.

Again, in the near future you don't need that many Tripple A all over the place as every tank and IFVs likely to be equipped with APS.

1x system per light infantry battalion.
Thus, 6x for 2x brigade. Other Remaining brigades in the division would be either armor or mechanized.

3x for the long rane heavy SP artillery regiment/battalion. (Each system per individual artillery battery)

1x with air defence artillery regiment. (To complement the MRSAM/LRSAM battery)

More or less that seems feasible in my book.

We can't develop it but we can buy it to equip AD groupings. Suicide munitions comes in many sizes, some as small as DJI drone some grow as large as the Lancet. You'll need all round solution, you can't defeat DJI drones with 20/30/57mm guns.

This is not saying that triple AAA is dead, but its role will diminished greatly in the future as drones continues getting more sophisticated.

Again, in the near future you don't need that many Tripple A all over the place as every tank and IFVs likely to be equipped with APS.

Not that many countries invest in tanks and IFVs, and when they do, not many are wealthy enough to equip theirs with luxuries such as APS.

Some IFV's does come with high end turret (ex: Boxer with Kongsberg RT60 turret) giving it options to engage loitering munitions, but this is some premium stuff relegated to the wealthy but small European armies and the solutions to overwhelm this, likely is as simple as throwing as much suicide munitions until it ran out of ammo or some lucky hits.

Armor development through the years:

1930-1990s====> Frontal armor against Kinetic and Chemical energy projectiles
2000-2010s=====>Belly armor and V shaped hull against IED
2020-20x?======> Roof armor against whatever dropped from above

As International law does not specifically prohibit the use of napalm or other incendiaries against military targets, it is time to burn Russian fortifications.

Napalm loaded GMRLS / HİMARS could clean Russian defensive positions.

Napalm is effective against dug-in enemy personnel. The burning incendiary composition flows into foxholes, tunnels, and bunkers, and drainage and irrigation ditches and other improvised troop shelters. Even people in undamaged shelters can be killed by hyperthermia, radiant heat, dehydration, asphyxiation, smoke exposure, or carbon monoxide poisoning.Crews of armored fighting vehicles are also vulnerable, due to the intense heat conducted through the armor. Even in the case of a near miss, the heat can be enough to disable a vehicle.
