Precation,im sure they knew about Ukraine's drone developments and figured they will be able to reach those bases soon.
And with the range of the new drone of 3000km in april 2025,they were right to be cautious.
There are no more limits for Ukraine by the West,from now on Ukraine can reach almost every Russian asset on Russian territory with missiles or drones.

Who would dare fly some drones over any Russian base(Ukraine excluded),even those close to border regions?
Russia doesnt need to protect every base but we do,we have enemies everywhere on all sides.
Russia is big in territory,compare it to our territory,we have to protect every inch.
Before the Ukraine war the only threat for Russia were some sporadic US spy planes/drones,nothing else.

Putin might not choose to use a nuclear response but that doesnt mean a nuclear response is impossible. For one it's now a legal order to use a nuclear response to conventional attacks inside the Russian chain of command. Theres a zillion scenarios where Putin doesnt even have to be in the loop or even decapitated and a nuclear response is used.

If the second „strongest“ army in the world, want to use Nuclear weapons, because it was hit by some cheap drones. I mean, they do not hit the Kremlin or Putin himself, or nuclear facilities, just some aerospace structures and planes. Then, I am going to lose all my respect for Russia, whereas I normally find them as a strong opponent. To wrap it all up, Russia will be Balkanized in the end.

Russia must be Balkanized after what it did in Ukraine. There is no other way to discourage other countries from doing the same. Russia must pay a heavy price, and the disintegration into smaller countries is the best solution to the Russian problem.

The Japanese live much better than the Russians. And when Russia will be bankrupt and dirt poor, full of rebelious regions wanting independence, it is not out of the question that the Japanese may simply buy their islands from a corrupt Russian regime like the one of Yeltsin.

And don’t forget that Russia has those islands only because the US defeated Japan in WW2. When Russia fought Japan alone in 1904, it was defeated and humiliated.

If Russia would fight Japan again for control of those islands, even today, they would be badly beaten, as the Japanese Navy and Air Force is superior to Russia’s (considering that Russia cannot allocate all its resources to a conflict in the Far East).
