The Ukrainian army is currently attempting a counteroffensive at the junction of the Zaporizhzhia and Dnipropetrovsk regions. Fighting is ongoing near Pokrovske, near Huliaipole, and elsewhere. Japan is a surprise.

Japan is only agreeing to purchase non-lethal aid at this point. Air defense radars, body armor, medical supplies, spare parts, etc. Regardless, it all adds up because it frees up money for other countries to buy lethal aid.

That said, both Ukraine and the European Union are actively pushing the newly elected Japanese majority government to expand their purchases to lethal defensive aid, especially air defense systems and missiles. It's unlikely that Japan will ever change their posture to purchase offensive lethal aid, but it would be a huge win if they'd start purchasing PAC-2/3 Patriot Missiles for Patriot and AIM-120 and AIM-9 for NASAMS. Even a joint venture to buy Aster-30 missiles for SAMP-T and MICA missiles for Mirage-2000 from the French, or ASRAAM and Martlet from the British would go a long way towards bolstering Ukrainian air defense.

Ukraine has quietly stood up an F-16 squadron that is being supplemented by retired American and Dutch fighter pilots that are not only flying missions, but are actively teaching Ukrainian pilots the tricks of the trade while integrated into their ranks.

According to the reporting, Ukraine is now flying approximately 20-24 of their F-16s in country, with the remainder being held at training centers at locations in Europe, where cohorts of Ukrainian fighters pilots are learning to fly them. With 20-24 units in country and a shortage of trained pilots, Ukraine quietly reached out to combat veteran pilots and offered them lucrative 6 month contracts (with options for extension) to fly F-16s in Ukraine. Importantly, their current role is limited to the interception of cruise missiles and high speed drones in an air defense role, while Ukrainian pilots take on the more front line offensive roles.

Thank goodness we're finally doing this. I've been saying since 2023 that the West ought to get Ukraine F-16s ASAP and scour the world for North American and European pilots willing take lucrative contracts to fly them in Ukraine. Not only does it help bridge the training gap as Ukraine embarks on a multi year effort to get its own pilots trained up, it also offers combat expertise imbeded in the squadron, where advanced tactics and utilization of targeting pods and advanced radars can be trained.

So how do things stand after 4 years of war? At Russia's rate of progress over the last 3 years a child born in Russia today - or anywhere else - would die of old age long before Russia occupied all of Ukraine.

At the maximum extent of advances in Ukraine in March 2022, Russia had seized over 26% of the country (including the 7% they had seized in 2014). Ukraine repelled Russia’s Kyiv offensive by April 2022, reducing the occupied area to just over 20%.

Ukraine’s blitz counteroffensives in the fall of 2022 further decreased Russian-held territory to nearly 18%, and the latter has only seized an additional 1.5% of Ukraine’s territory in the nearly three years since.
