That is just over 400 miles - meaning Islamabad is closer to Kashgar then Karachi which is over 800 miles.

Except for the terrain, unless flying.

If the road is of appropriate standard terrain has reduced effect. Consider the Chinese expressways across the Tibetan Plateu. Karakorum Highway already has recieved huge upgrade with lower sections now expressway. As we move forward it will be upgraded to expressway. In fact the Swat Expresway is also clawing itself north west towards Tajikistan. Dir, Chitral sections are next on the development.

The fact is once rail and road networks are built they began a process of change by creating linkages. Over time they become major trade and development hubs. You can see how the west coast of America boomed once the railway reached the Pacific coast.

I agree, but will wait for the expressway and rail links to actually materialize first. No doubt the Chinese have the resources to make them possible.

Did I say today? When I went to Pakistan in 1989 I remember the only decent road to drive on was 7 miles stretch of Islamabad Highway. since then the country has vast network of motorways. You know that the souther portion of KKH is now a expressway upto Thakot. Rest of KKH is now upgraded. Give it another 20 years and all of it will be expressway.

20 years? Sure, we can wait to see what happens. You are probably correct with at least that timeframe.
