Operators of the Russian ZAK-30 "Citadel" air defense system have provided data on its operational effectiveness. The system is based on the BM-30-D "Spitsa" remotely controlled combat module, developed by the Nizhny Novgorod-based Central Research Institute "Burevestnik." The ZAK-30 "Citadel" is partially automated and designed to protect stationary facilities against drone attacks.
The system incorporates a radar station and an electro-optical suite. A key feature of the ZAK-30 is its use of 30mm rounds equipped with base-mounted induction fuzes, which allow for programmable, remote-detonated airbursts.
According to operators, an average of three rounds is required to neutralize a jet-powered drone. The system is also capable of engaging long-range "Flamingo" missiles. Depending on the range, the time required to destroy a target is approximately 15 seconds. The system is reportedly equipped with a 2A42 automatic cannon and carries an ammunition load of 300 rounds. Its reaction time—from target detection to opening fire—is between 1.5 and 2.5 seconds. It has an engagement range of up to 1,000 meters against fixed-wing (airplane-type) drones. The cost of the ammunition, the price of the system itself, and many of its technical specifications remain classified.
