Tata has cracked that segment - both Nexon and Punch are excellent buys in that segment. But lots of niggles in the Harrier and Safari. Obviously, most get hassle free cars but as a ratio a significant amount get cars with issues. India needs a lemon law.

Can't go wrong with Suzuki, Hyundai, Toyota and Honda - from customer service to availability of parts, they are always prompt. The Europeans launch good products but their A.S.S is pathetic - most notorious is Skoda.
I think TATA is new in game ,it will take time to work out all issues , same for Mahindra , in Korea or japan or Europe carmakers have a huge skilled workforce with tons of experience and most carmakers are too old in market ,so they are quite well established and their products are refined , TATA Mahindra make safe cars now ,but comfort and features and tuning the engine is somewhat a bit lacking

Engines are great. Telco has better engineering pedigree than many Asian makers. And they have been making cars since the 1990s.

@Gessler thanks for starting the dedicated thread just now.

I moved some of the earlier posts+replies from IND economy thread to here (that folks might find interesting to read).

If folks find any more there to move, lmk.

I have pinned this thread too.

Actually, no. What seems to be the issue? Each side shows the results of its policies very successfully. Seriously.
I hope safety becomes a part of policy everywhere , you can't drive tincan

Actually, yes you can. Safety costs money in that it drive up the costs of acquiring, maintaining and repairing vehicles. It all depends on the buying power of the public.

Well they are already getting scammed on the non-safe stuff as it is. Double the price for half the car etc...

This is the issue with investment and supply chains (for Pakistan) that few want to grapple with seriously.

They think CPEC will automatically fix that....when it is a completely different thing.

The Chinese are very reluctant to finance actual production in other countries....increasingly so (As their own sunset problem looms and the blanket is pulled tighter for warmth).

There is no other way but to have own technocrats and corporate people (with the related bureaucrats) to be in concord to bring in actual production factories from those with relative surplus in other parts of world regarding it.

Price is not much a issue if the carmaker get serious , look at rating of new Tata cars and their price , that's best bang for buck in Indian market ,just best

Let me just observe that some markets have buyers where saving money by whatever means possible, is far more important than features of the car. :D

Well, let me just observe that some countries have governments where exploiting the citizenry by whatever means possible, is far more important than shouldering their responsivities to them. :D

MSIL is already facing criticism and loosing market share to tata specifically . Off lately, the customer is slowly becoming safety conscious.

Another forgotten aspect is -

  • Taxation. For a country like india , it makes almost 50% of the Onroad price per se :)
  • Archaic Laws need to be re-visited .
  • Lastly, OEM,s need to bring in Authentic reliable CVT tranny,s to market .
I am on market for a car and i see AMT galore less than 10Lakh.. MSIL gives u 4 speed gearbox developed some where in 2 decades back .. Honda offers a good Automatic woth jazz and amaze while toyota thinks indians do not deserve their cars.. so they resorted to reselling the maruti junk !!!!!!!!!!

While Skoda has some horror A.S.S. stories, I might just get this one.
