Japan lacks effective deterrence against N. Korea’s missiles

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida answers questions from the press in Brussels on Thursday.

By Michitaka Kaiya / Yomiuri Shimbun Staff WriterPrime Minister Fumio Kishida has strongly condemned North Korea’s launch of what is believed to be a new type of intercontinental ballistic missile. It is regrettable that Japan has no effective means to prevent Pyongyang’s reckless behavior.

“North Korea’s actions threaten the peace and security of our country, the region and the international community, and are in violation of U.N. Security Council resolutions. Its actions are clearly unacceptable,” Kishida told reporters Thursday at a hotel in Brussels.

Referring to measures against the reclusive country, the prime minister said, “We will address the issue in coordination with the United States and South Korea, including examining whether to impose sanctions.”

However, there is little room for Japan to strengthen its sanctions on North Korea. In terms of diplomacy, the North Korean policy of U.S. President Joe Biden’s administration has stalled. Securing cooperation from Russia and China, which have close ties with North Korea, would also be difficult.

Under these circumstances, Japan urgently needs to strengthen its defense capabilities.

The government is considering acquiring capabilities to attack enemy bases because North Korea has developed missiles that are difficult to intercept with Japan’s existing missile defense systems. Such capabilities would enable Japan to destroy an enemy’s missile launch site and other facilities if it was acting in self-defense.

“We must continue to seriously consider what we should do to protect the lives of our people,” Kishida said Thursday.

Since August 2016, shoot-down orders have been kept in place so that the Self-Defense Forces can immediately take destructive measures against ballistic missiles and other projectiles if they are thought to be entering Japanese airspace.

A two-tier interception system has been established, with Maritime Self-Defense Force Aegis destroyers equipped with SM-3 interceptors deployed in the Sea of Japan, and surface-to-air PAC-3 guided missiles deployed at the Defense Ministry in Ichigaya, Tokyo, among other locations.

The latest North Korean missile followed a higher-than-normal trajectory and it is estimated to have reached an altitude of more than 6,000 kilometers, much higher than the maximum altitudes of about 500 kilometers for SM-3 and less than 20 kilometers for PAC-3.

Ballistic missiles are easier to intercept when they slow down towards the apex of their trajectory, but Japan’s existing defense systems would have to target the latest North Korean ICBM during its descent phase when it would be traveling at a significantly higher speed.

“It would have been difficult for us to intercept the latest missile considering its altitude and speed,” a senior Defense Ministry official said.

So Japan can not even handle North Korea's missile threat, it can forget about stopping Siberian missile storms from Russia. Polar bear can erase Japan from the surface of the earth in minutes if not seconds.

======================

Deterrence has nothing to do with military capability.

Wanna test Japan's military prowess ? Fuck around and find out

Nuclear Missile and Ballistic Missile defense mostly comprises dedicated systems like the Aegis. Japan lacks land-based Aegis to combat active missile threats (except on its ships) but that's defense, not deterrence.
Most of Japan's deterrence is based off of the American Nuclear Umbrella. To be independent and have its own deterrence Japan would need nukes of its own but that's not happening anytime soon.

Japan are using DPRK to rearm, just like the Germans are using Russia. Never trust these expansionist powers in my view. Though I do like Japan and Germany as civilizations, they are very threatening to everybody around them. Much more so than China or Russia.

A strong Japan is good for Asia's security. Just as a strong Germany is good for Europe post Ukraine war.

We need Japan to tie up the Chinese and Russians in the 1st island chain. Peace is preserved that way.

Good for us, Japan is re-arming and moving away from pacifism.

Chinese are underestimating Japan again.

Havent you guys learn lt anything from your past?

It took so many countries to take down Japan not to mention they have a good economy and technology once the gates open the Japanese would able to become a military power again. They have everything only negative thing for them is their fertility rates.

All of the Altaic peoples the Turks, Koreans, Mongols, Manchus and the Japanese are all brave and courageous. Never discount them.

We lived with Japan for thousands of years and we know who they are, we neither over nor under estimate them, as for the recent past, yes , Japan was industralized a hundred years earlier than China but it is no longer the case, Britain was industralized earlier than the rest of world which enabled it to conquer the whole world but it doesn't mean they are remotely able to do it again now.
As for Japan has a good economy, it did have a remarkable economy in the past, but not now, actually Japan's GDP now is smaller than what it was in 1995, their economy has been stuck in stagnation for 3 decades already, this is extremely rare, even unprecedent in the whole world, the time which most countries experienced robust growth.

Japan is very proficient in ballistic missile defense. The backbone of Japanese BMD is their navy, the Japanese MSDF. They've done multiple successful intercept in the past.

The newest Maya class destroyer is even more advanced and equipped with both SM-3 block IIA and SM-6 missile. Each ship could hold as many as 96 of the anti ballistic missile weapons.

And Japan is now planning for an even more capable Maya class equipped with the even more powerful AN/SPY-7 radar.
