The Ministry of Defense is inclined to purchase Turkish-made corvettes at the expense of funds provided by the State Defense Order for 2020, which remain unused.
This was reported by the Defense Industry Courier with reference to a meeting held on November 13 at the Department of Military-Technical Cooperation of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.
According to an informed source, at the meeting "it was about the use of the funds provided by the DOZ, which remained unused, and most likely, it is the Turkish project that will be given the green light."
Under such conditions, only the state enterprise "Research and Production Complex of Gas Turbine Construction Zorya" - "Mashproekt", which is a Ukrainian developer and manufacturer of gas turbines for ships, will be able to take a guaranteed part in the corvette construction project. As for other Ukrainian enterprises, the possibility of their participation is currently unknown.
It is noted that the Ministry of Defense does not see the expediency of continuing the construction of the Ukrainian corvette . However, last year and this year, options for involving Turkish companies in its completion were considered. At the same time, the possibility of purchasing Turkish corvettes was considered.
"The first corvette can be manufactured with our participation in Turkey, and all subsequent ones will be manufactured at a Ukrainian company. Here we have in Ukraine, not in Turkey. This is a fundamental condition, "said Oleh Uruskyi, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Strategic Industries of Ukraine, at a press conference in October.
It will be recalled that in February this year, a delegation of the Ministry of Defense visited Turkey, where it held meetings and talks with Vice President of the Undersecretariat of the Defense Industry Serdar Demirel and the management of the STM concern. The Ukrainian delegation also visited the production facilities of Dearsan, Yonca Onuk, Turkish shipyard and repair shipyard.
During the meetings, detailed information was obtained on the possibilities of building warships with a tonnage of 150 to 2600 tons for various purposes, the experience of Turkish companies in implementing large-scale projects for foreign partners, including customer service, crew and engineering training, maintenance and more.
During the talks, the parties considered a number of possible options for cooperation, taking into account the available capabilities of Ukrainian companies and the readiness of the Turkish side to supply and localize the production of components and units of offshore platforms and weapons in Ukraine.
And last month, the Minister of Defense of Ukraine Andriy Taran and the Head of the Undersecretariat of the Turkish Defense Industry Ismail Demir signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the development of cooperation in the field of defense-industrial projects.
The document outlines the intentions of the parties to launch and implement joint projects for the construction of warships, unmanned aerial vehicles and all types of turbine engines.
