Airplanes will also land on roads where traffic always moves. The government is planning to allow airplanes to fly on the highway in case of disaster or emergency in the country.

The technical name for this arrangement is an air strip—meaning, a runway where aircraft can take off even if there are no airport facilities.

In this case, a runway of minimum length of three kilometers will be required for an aircraft to take off. There will be no road dividers on the portion of the road designated for airstrips.

Although the main task of this initiative taken for the first time in the country is the Department of Road Transport and Highways, the Civil Aviation Authority will provide technical support. According to Babychak sources, in case of emergency, the Air Force will conduct take-off and landing operations from that specific air strip part of the highway. However, it has not yet been specified which highways of the country will be covered or where the air strip will be built.

The government has taken the initiative to form a consultative committee on the overall issue of the air strip this month. For this, the names of experts have been sought from various departments. These experts will suggest which highways are suitable for airstrips. In addition to widening of existing highways in length and width, narrow roads will also be constructed if the location is preferred.

It is reported that the initial discussion of the air strip includes a section of the highway from the western end of Bangabandhu Bridge to Hatikumrul in Sirajganj and an area of the highway around Khulna Agricultural University.

In this context, CAAB Chairman Air Vice Marshal Md. Mofidur Rahman told Ajker Potrika that the proposal to build an air strip on the national highway has been there for a long time. Bebichak will give expert opinion even if the matter is related to defense. Because big planes can't land on the road if they want to. The road should have that much power. Because of this,CAAB will give an opinion on what kind of aircraft will land, how much the strength of the road should be increased. Hopefully, the highway department will take this into consideration in the future expansion of the country's highways.

Incidentally, in 2021, neighboring India inaugurated an airstrip on National Highway 925 at Barmere in Rajasthan for the first time.

Could've just renovated/developed the old air strips and unused airports first. We have several of them. Could be just another plan for corruption or may be they think it's necessary though i don't really see any point. More importantly when air defense is weak what's point in building these?
