ASELSAN and TÜBİTAK BİLGEM conduct joint studies in the field of post-quantum cryptography. The Post-Quantum Cryptography Workshop, organized in this context, was held on December 5, 2019. In line with the decisions taken at the ASELSAN-TÜBİTAK BİLGEM Cooperation Workshop held between February 29 and March 1, 2020, it was decided to collaborate in the projects of the Ministry of National Defense and the Presidency of Defense Industry, which are likely to be projected. systems are recommended. Airborne Platforms & Air Traffic Control Tower Communication System


Airborne Platforms and Air Traffic Control Tower Communication System provides rotary and fixed wing airborne platforms and air traffic control towers with voice and data communication solutions and Tower Radio Communication Systems.

V/UHF and HF software defined radios are provided to airborne platforms and air traffic control towers for meeting the need of secure air-to-ground and air-to-air communication. This system offers frequency hopping, encrypted and clear voice and data communication options. In the scope of this system solution, integration services are carried in airborne platforms.

Airborne Platforms Communication System

Airborne platform configuration includes 2 V/UHF radio systems for meeting air-to-air and air-to-ground Line of Sight (LOS) communication need and 1 HF radio system for meeting Beyond Line of Sight (BLOS). For each airborne platform, antenna analysis, power analysis, balance analysis, mechanic analysis and EMI/EMC analysis are performed.

V/UHF radio system contains V/UHF Airborne Radio, V/UHF Band Antenna and Remote Control Unit which are compatible with aviation standards.

HF radio system contains HF Airborne Radio, HF Band Antenna, Antenna Tuning Unit and Remote Control Unit which are compatible with aviation standards.

In airborne platforms having mission computer, remote system control can be made on the computer.

ASELSAN has communication system modernization and integration experience on air platforms such as; ATAK T-129, AH-1W, AS-532, S-70, UH-1H, CN235, Mİ-17, Mİ-8, Mİ-24, Mİ-35, SU-25 ve MİG-29.

Air Traffic Control Tower Communication System

Tower communication system consist of V/UHF and HF radios and Tower Radio Communication System. Antenna placement analysis and electrical infrastructure checks are performed for each tower.

Tower Radio Communication System (TRCS) offers a solution for the need of simultaneous use of multiple radios and phones in air traffic control towers.

TRCS contains Radio Switching System (RSS), Voice Recording System, computer with a touchscreen and control software. System also includes accessories for operators.

Radio Switching System (RSS) switches voice/data between radios and phones with tower operators. The desired number of software defined digital V/UHF and HF radios, analog radios and analog phones can be connected to RSS. Since the system has a modular structure, it offers an expansion feature.

All operators are provided with touch screen computers mounted on consoles which are located seeing the whole field. Those screens can be set with different view angles in order to overcome reflection problem due to Sun or room lighting.

Operators can;

- See how many radios are connected to RSS, which radios go into the receiving state and which radios are used by which operators,

- Configure the all V/UHF and HF radio settings,

- Transmit more than one radio at the same time,

- View field maps

All radio and phone communication using TRCS is recorded to a Voice Recording System which has a redundant structure.

ERCİYES Project Continues to Move Forward Albeit with Delays

News published by Anadolu Agency (AA) on April 28, 2020, shared information and images related to the activities carried out within the scope of the ERCİYES Avionics Modernization Project Serial Production Phase, performed by Turkish engineers and technicians at the 2nd Air Maintenance Factory Directorate (HBFM) in Kayseri. The images featured the modernization activities conducted on C-130 Hercules Military Transport Aircraft, with the tail numbers 608, 609 and 991, painted in Turkish Stars colors.

In his statement to the AA correspondent, the 2nd HBFM Factory Level Maintenance and Repair Manager Aeronautical Engineer Lt. Col. Süleyman ERBİL noted that the maintenance of the C-130B/E Hercules Aircraft is carried out every 6 years at the 2nd HBFM facilities, and the maintenance activities that are completed in 120 working days under normal conditions can take 6 months to 1 year, depending on the aircraft's condition.

The first aircraft (C-130E with the tail number 63-13188), the maintenance of which was completed within the scope of ERCİYES Project (Avionic Modernization of C-130E/B Aircraft) under the coordination of the Presidency of Defense Industries (SSB) and under the main contractor ship of Turkish Aerospace (TUSAŞ), was delivered to the Turkish Air Force Command (HvKK) at a ceremony held at TUSAŞ facilities on August 8, 2014. Speaking at the ceremony, President of Defense Industries Prof. İsmail DEMİR stated that they aimed to complete all modernization activities within the scope of the Project in 2016 and take 19 aircraft into inventory.

The acceptance process of the second and last prototype aircraft of the Project (C-130B with the tail number 61-2634) took longer than planned, and after obtaining flight approval, it was handed over to the HvKK with an acceptance flight conducted in Kayseri in the second half of December 2016. Thus, the Prototype Phase could be completed at the end of 2016 under the ERCİYES Project, the contract of which came into force on January 4, 2007.

The aircraft, which are planned to remain in the inventory until 2040, have been named as C-130BM and C-130EM after the modernization activities.

Within the scope of the Serial Production Phase, five aircraft were planned to be put into service in 2015, and then updated as 2016 and 2017. The 736, 960 and 468 were the three of these aircraft. The work on the first Serial Production Aircraft (Serial No-I, C-130B Aircraft with tail number 58-0736) conducted at TUSAŞ facilities was expected to be completed in 2014 and it was planned to be delivered to the HvKK by the end of the year. However, the acceptance date was later updated as November/December 2015 and then as 2017 Q1. The modernization of the Serial No-I aircraft with the tail number 736 was completed, but as the time for Factory Level Maintenance and Repair activities got closer, it was accepted to conduct such activities and its official delivery to the HvKK was delayed. The delivery date of the Serial No-II aircraft with the tail number 960 (61-960 C-130B) was also planned as 2017 Q1, but the acceptance process was eventually completed on 28 December 2017.

With the revision made in the project schedule, each C-130 Hercules Aircraft to be modernized starting from the 2nd Serial Production Aircraft (4th aircraft modernized in the Project) is subjected to Factory Level Maintenance and Repair activities and then delivered to the HvKK.

The avionic modernization kit integration and installation activities for each C-130 aircraft take about 6 months, while Factory Level Maintenance and Repair activities take an average of 6-7 months. Thus, the aircraft undergoing maintenance are simultaneously subjected to both Factory Level Maintenance and Repair activities and avionic modernization.

The delay in the project schedule led to a loss of around US$ 25-26 million by TUSAŞ as of October 2015. Additionally, the transformation (workmanship) of two C-130B/E aircraft into C-130BM/EM configuration free of charge in return for the penalty caused by the delay came to the agenda and an agreement was reached with the HvKK. Furthermore, it was announced in those days that TUSAŞ would perform the integration and installation activities of avionic modernization kits for an additional C-130 Aircraft free of charge. Thus, a total of five C-130B/E aircraft, two of which are prototypes, would be modernized and upgraded to C-130BM/EM configuration at TUSAŞ facilities, and, upon the request of the HvKK, the avionic kit integration and installation activities could be performed for an additional six aircraft provided that the costs of workmanship are paid for by the HyKK.

The C-130BM/EM Hercules Military Transport Aircraft is equipped with a Digital Cockpit (4-color Multifunctional Display with a moving map capability), two Central Display Units (CDU) and two multifunction Central Control Computers compatible with international navigational requirements, as well as with a multifunction Mission Computer with high operational capability, Flight Management System (FMS), Ground Mission Planning Unit compatible with the Air Force Information System, and display and lighting systems compatible with Night Vision Goggles.

The Operational Flight Program (OFP, nearly 3.2 million lines of code) used in the national mission computer (Central Control Computer) to control and manage the new avionic equipment in the aircraft was developed by TUSAŞ engineers in accordance with the DO-178B Level-A standard.

Thanks to the digital cockpit compatible with the Night Vision Goggles (NVG), safe navigation capability has been secured at night, day and under any weather conditions. In addition, the aircraft has gained the capability allowing night jumping (both parachutists and loads) at low altitudes.

Within the scope of the project, the aircraft are also equipped with the MIDS Terminal and Link-16 Tactical Data Link System. Thus, the C-130BM/EM Aircraft become capable of conducting integrated operations with the E-7T Airborne Early Warning and Control Aircraft, modernized F-16s and command control elements (this capability was used in the operation conducted in Libya recently). With the Link-16 Tactical Data Link Integration activities, the aircraft have gained interoperability with other platforms in the inventory (ability to share video, audio and text (in short message format) with other friendly and allied elements). On account of Link-16, C-130BM/EM Aircraft are able to transmit short, concise and cosmic level of confidential information to both ground (air-to-ground) and air (air-to-air) elements.

The C-130 Hercules Aircraft has a crew of five; two Pilots, Navigator, Flight Engineer and Loadmaster. Thanks to the FMS software developed by TUSAŞ engineers and replacing the Navigator within the scope of the ERCİYES Project, the number of crew in the modernized C-130BM/EM Hercules Aircraft has been reduced to four.

Additionally, in 2013, within the scope of the ERCİYES Project, the transformation of two C-130BM/EM aircraft into the Gun Ship configuration with a new amendment to the ERCİYES Contract was brought to the agenda, but no progress was achieved in the following years

FEMSAN Launches Serial Production of Slotless BLDC Motors Following a Successful R&D Process

Procurement of slotless BLDC servo motors, which are only manufactured in countries achieving certain technology levels, are becoming achievable from domestic sources. The Defense and Aerospace qualification of slotless BLDC servo motors were launched in 2014 as an R&D project, with all electromagnetic and structural designs were successfully completed by Turkish engineers.


Electric Motors are classified due to many different criteria. One of the most basic qualification methods is that of separating the motor according to the power source that operates the motor. From such a point of view, we come across a grouping of alternative current (AC) and direct current (DC) motors. In addition to this basic classification, electric motors can be categorized as asynchronous - synchronous motors, brush - brushless motors pursuant to the number of phases. The separation within the slotless, BLDC Motor that is the topic of our article is based on the structure of the motor. As it is seen, there are also slotted type brushless motors. Slotless motors are frequently confused with coreless motors. Sometimes, there is a core in the slotted and slotless motors known as lamination. The difference between the two is that while the copper wire winding constituting the electromagnetic area is enrolled within the slot, in the other type the core is in the tubular shape and it externally covers the coils in a cylindrical shape. There are two critical points in slotless BLDC motors. The technological difficulty in the winding is optimizing the magnetic field strength without the tips of the slot, while the difficulty in terms of the process is forming the coils impeccably, and placing them inside the iron core and keeping it there. The slotted and slotless BLDC motors structures are demonstrated in the image below.

As the name suggests, in the coreless engine structures, there are no cores interacting with the bobbins in any way. The windings are hardened with resin or an epoxy derivative chemical and thus the structure could be kept as rigid.

The first electric motors come up an industrial sense in history as a slotted structure. The slotless motor structures were first seen at the end of the 1960s. There are several rumors regarding their initial implementation areas. Certain sources claim that they were utilized in the satellites launched to space by NASA while others suggest that they were used in small tools such as razor blades.

Similar to all other activities related with engineering, the slotless BLDC motor structures have pros and cons. The basic advantages of slotless BLDC motors can be summarized as follows:

› High efficiency

› Lack of cogging torque

› More precise control

› Silent operation

› Dynamic reaction

› Low EMI emission

As a result of the aforementioned advantages, Slotless BLDC Motors were founded to have a wide area of application in the defense and aerospace industries. Especially, due to their compact structures, these motors have been utilized for a long time in challenging projects where each gram is calculated.

As we take a look at the utilization areas of slotless BLDC Motors in the world, we can easily observe defense and aerospace areas ranking high on the charts. The same type of products have been imported and utilized in our defense industry for a long while. The foreign dependency in this area was abolished with the help of the systems developed by FEMSAN.

FEMSAN has been active in the area of design and production of the electric motors for approximately 30 years. The company has been manufacturing products for the defense industry over the last fifteen years. While the first products were Brushed Direct Current (DC) Motors, throughout the period different types of motors were also manufactured and introduced to the market by FEMSAN to fulfill the demands of the market. Permanent Magnet - PM Motors, AC Synchronous Servo Motors and aircraft alternators are the most critical examples on this subject.

Having received support from the nationalization and indigenization projects expanding significantly in recent years in our country, in 2016 FEMSAN completed its slotted, brushless BLDC Servo Motors group building project which it had started in 2014. It was completely indigenous from scratch without conducting any reverse engineering activities, and throughout 2017 the company successfully accomplished the qualification processes of these products towards the defense and aerospace areas. Nowadays FEMSAN is fulfilling the requirements of our country’s leading defense industry companies in this area through domestic resources.

As also mentioned above, the purpose of the project is to build an indigenous slotless BLDC motor group. The product groups revealed following the completion of the studies are shown in the table below: The As part of a subproject under a Technology Development Liability (TDL), Femsan was commissioned to develop a range of slotless BLDC motors within a contract signed between the Presidency of Defence Industries (SSB) and ROKETSAN.

The design activities as part of the project are being completely conducted by Turkish engineers indigenously. Different electromagnetic designs emerged in the initial stage, their advantages and disadvantages were analyzed and those most convenient for implementation were selected. Resistance against challenging environmental conditions over these designs were identified and thermal and structural analyses were run. During the production stage, processes specialized for the products were identified and this was and is regarded as the most critical process of the project. In the last stage, the plans and results are controlled with performance tests and matching points are measured and recorded.

With its staff of over 160 people and conducting critical activities towards the defense industry for 15 years, FEMSAN is also capable of manufacturing products and offering services in electromagnetic and mechatronics areas with its R&D staff of 20 people within the institution. The company’s areas of activity are electric, mechanic and electronics, yet FEMSAN offers services to its customers sometimes in only electric motors or alternators at the component level or sometimes just actuator with other components integrated to the motor. Besides that a fin actuation assembly of an ammunition could also be manufactured by FEMSAN as a sub - system.

Presently, FEMSAN products are being utilized in machine gun platforms, turrets, radars, magazines, stabilizers and many other rotating and linear systems and will be used for many years to come

Turkish Armed Forces Foundation (TAFF)supports its subsidiary ASPİLSAN energy and İŞBRİ to accelerate its investments to Turkey in order to gain new abilities.

Turkey's first generator factory, İŞBİR is continuing its activities in the production of generators and alternators. It is investing to ensure sustainable growth. ISBİR 182 million TL. worth investment and TAFF has allocated 76 million TL of resources to be used in the investment.

Civil and military aircraft battery manufacturer ASPİLSAN, which was established with donations to meet the military battery needs, accelerated its R&D investments in the field of energy storage. Ankara, Istanbul and Kayseri in three new R&D centre, the company has made the planning investment in order to earn the first lithium-ion battery production facility in Turkey in this direction, and a few days ago signed the construction works main contractor contract factories. TAFF supported ASPİLSAN's planned investment of 186 million TL with a resource transfer of 109 million TL.

With the lithium-ion battery cell production capability to be gained with the factory, which is expected to be operational in 2021, it will provide solutions to the increasing energy storage need with domestic resources.

Multipurpose Mobile Tower Developed to Provide Situational Awareness at Bases and Borders

The increased border threats associated with the recent rise in irregular migration, illegal trafficking and acts of terrorism are among the leading items on the agendas of military and security forces. GES Engineering has developed its innovative Multipurpose Mobile Tower solution taking into consideration the specific needs of the units operating in these fields.

Unaffected by the Limitations of Terrain

BNA Tiltrotor UAV is Flight Ready

The new tiltrotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Alesta, developed by BNA - Nurol BAE Systems Air Systems, will make its first flight in the coming days.

Nurol BAE Systems Air Systems (BNA), which has been working on a different UAV concept under the coordination of the Presidency of Defense Industries (SSB), has introduced the Alesta Unmanned Aircraft solution with vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) capability for the use of security forces.

Alesta’s configuration is unique compared to other UAVs. The vehicle can take-off and land with its wings in the vertical position and fly like a fixed-wing aircraft when switched to horizontal flight by rotating its wings. Combining the advantages of fixed-wing planes and helicopters, Alesta doesn’t need a runway that fixed-wing aircraft require thanks to VTOL capable tilting-wings. When transitioned to horizontal flight mode, the UAV can take advantage of the lift created by the fixed wing to fly longer distances than helicopters. Alesta, which has an environmentally friendly electric motor and propulsion system, is designed to perform all tasks in a fully autonomous manner. Electric motor propulsion units distributed on every wing brings increased flight safety through fault tolerance. Autonomous mission execution capability beyond-line-of-sight (BLOS) is a key requirement for integration into regulated air space in the future.

The ground tests of Alesta are expected to be completed within 1-2 weeks, and the flight tests are being arranged to be carried out in August at the UAV Testing and Evaluation Center in Kalecik according to the BNA officials. Alesta is designed as a proof-of-concept to introduce the concept to potential users and to develop larger aircraft based on this configuration. By integrating various payloads and sensors, Alesta will be able to perform different tasks such as reconnaissance, surveillance, intelligence, disaster relief, and firefighting. Potential use cases for BNA's Alesta UAVs include cargo transport in rural areas for both military and civilian purposes, reconnaissance in suburbs, rural areas, or near cities subject to local civil aviation regulation restrictions, search & rescue operations and OPV (Optionally Piloted Aircraft) long-term targeting. The Alesta CV (Concept Version) is a fully electric tilt-wing VTOL UAV built from carbon composite materials. The vehicle has two identical sized tilting wings and eight independent propulsion units.

The conceptual properties of the Alesta family members to come are unique with higher performance & payload capacities (50+Kg). The aircraft has a bay in the front for installing camera payloads. It is 1.6 m in length, 1.6 m in height, and has a 1.8 m wingspan. The vehicle has a range of 20-35 km (depending on cargo weight) and a maximum speed of 120 km/h. Alesta has a payload capacity of 5-8 kg, flight endurance of 20-30 minutes, and a maximum weight of 25 kg. The next configuration of Alesta will be able to be controlled by using virtual reality, and it will be capable of automatically detecting an undefined obstacle and perform avoidance maneuvers accordingly.

The serial production of Alesta is expected to begin at the beginning of 2021.

Multipurpose Mobile Tower Developed to Provide Situational Awareness at Bases and Borders

The increased border threats associated with the recent rise in irregular migration, illegal trafficking and acts of terrorism are among the leading items on the agendas of military and security forces. Multipurpose Mobile Tower can be integrated with such payloads as radars, communication equipment, electro-optical systems and armaments, mounted to ensure situational awareness and to provide a strategic advantage to the user.

The advantages and flexibility provided by GES’ Multipurpose Mobile Tower solution include its easy transportation and installation, its ability to operate for long periods in the field with high reliability, its adverse-weather resistance, its multipurpose use and payload integration, its manned and unmanned operation, and the ability of the tower and payloads to be operated remotely via a 3G module.

Unaffected by the Limitations of Terrain

Another innovative feature of the Multipurpose Mobile Tower is its cabin and moving block, which can be moved in the specified direction with 0.1-degree precision. This allows an increase of the viewing and engagement angles of the payloads, such as armaments, and the electro-optic sensors mounted on the tower. Accordingly, all limitations related to the terrain are circumvented.


A Practical Solution to the Needs in the Field

Serhat Demir, Co-founder of GES Engineering, claims that the Multipurpose Mobile Tower was developed as a result of a breakthrough in their product development approach: “The Multipurpose Mobile Tower is a product that is able to level itself automatically on sloping terrain, which we achieved by integrating our Shelter-Levelling System, as another product we have developed and put into use in the sector, into our Multipurpose Mobile Tower. Our Shelter and Mobile Platform Lift and Transportation System offers the additional advantage of allowing the tower to be transported without being loaded onto a truck. GES Engineering has emerged as a company that is able to develop integrated solutions that combine its existing products. As our product family grows, so will our range of innovative solutions.”

Why not a normal telescopic mast, or something like that. The folded design doesn't seem to have any significance while on the move e.g. while driving around.

I guess it's because of weight problem.


  • By moving the cabin and the lifting block in the specified direction with 0.1-degree precision, the engagement angle of the payloads, such as the weapons or electro-optic sensors carried by the tower, can be increased, in addition to their operating limits. Accordingly, all limitations related to the terrain are ruled out.
  • It can operate for long periods with high reliability in the field thanks to its electromechanical mechanisms and mechanical locks.
  • A ladder located within the lifting block allows the crew to access the cabin. It is also possible to enter through a door before the cabin has been hoisted to its vertical position, and to reposition the system vertically from inside the cabin.
The cabin can be positioned with this system. I don't know if Mast can allow this.

I didn't know that the entire tower was going to be used as a watch post.

I was thinking something like this would have made more sense.
