I think it's time to create a thread about the ongoing (and growing) insurgency in Cabo Delgado province,Mozambique where security forces are facing Islamist groups (including ISIS) wishing to establish an Islamic state in this part of Africa. (A region also rich in natural ressources)

The fight has intensified in recent weeks and terrorist groups reportedly seized Palma town. The soldiers of the city's garrison reportedly fled in face of the terrorist's advance.

Very good decision @Vergennes on opening this thread! I posted some threads and the issue is going absolutely unnoticed while it carries the potential to screw completely another African country. We have very little intervention by the international community in the name of US Special Forces on the ground for Foreign Internal Defence mission but I think they got a little bit late there. Now I just hope that the FID initiative will be enough but I actually don't think so.

I am usually not a fan of US interventions but I hope in that case the US intervene fast. I remember when the sh!t hit the fan in Philippines when ISIS took Marawi. The fast reaction of the US and the quality of their FID mission still have its effects on the training level of the Filipino operational units and their tactics till that day. They managed to take under control the bad situation and the role of the US advisors was critical I think.

Mozambiquan soldiers fled when Isis came into the town.

God Damn it!!!

This incompetence and corruption along with low morale of the troops is making shit worse.

This seems to be the standard of a lot of African armies. In Liberia, Samuel Doe's Liberian soldiers even gave up to the rebels without a fight. In the DRC, troops despite training and equipment melted away.

Lets not forget in Iraq with Mosul. How did isis took the city?? The troops that were suppose to fight and protect the city fled without firing a shot. Isis grows and takesover cities or towns without a fight and its fustrating!!!!

The thing you are talking about is why I am quite skeptical about Somalia and all the training and equipment Turkey gives to Mogadishu backed forces. The second these guys see an opportunity they wouldn’t only run away but will abandon the equipment we gave them too... if they don’t sell it on the black market before that. Because that’s just how the way is in Africa.

Discipline, professionalism, organizational skills, loyalty... such things just don’t exist in these lands.

Fairly good context and discussion of the larger issues involved:

New Delhi: Mozambique's military says it has regained full control of the coastal town of Palma, more than a week after it was raided by militant Islamists linked to Daesh/ISIS, but why has the insurgency being continuing for three years?, is Cabo Delgado province a new frontline for terror in east Africa?, what does the halting of French energy company Total's $20 billion project mean for the economy and development? and most importantly what is being done to stop the human cost in the conflict? On 'The Gist', Borges Nhamirre, a Journalist and Researcher with the Public Integrity Centre in the capital Maputo speaks to StratNews Global Associate Editor Amitabh P. Revi.
