I'm not disagreeing with you. It's just strange, the U.S. (Trump administration) have said NO and instead offering F-15/F-18 since Dec 2020, but according to @Madokafc we're still in talks for F-35 until now.

Coincidentally, at the end of last month there's speculation that USAF would retire the oldest batch of F-35 that they are currently used for training.

It'd take expensive budget to upgrade them, so the most efficient option is to just retire them and replace them with the newest versions.

I think the talks may not necessarily result in acquisition of F-35. There are many potential possibilities that can result from such talks

Block 4 is the one that being envisioned as the proper frontline fighter. If USAF feels that it is too expensive to upgrade those platforms to Block 4, there is no point in acquiring those platforms except if the acquirer intend to use those platforms solely during parade wkwkwkw
